Double concave on HWS ?

About to start first attempt on a HWS. I am basically going to copy a 7’3 funboard that i have. Have been messing around with AKU and template maker and can see that template maker provides what looks like a double concave ! is ths a problem when it comes to attaching the base planking ie splitiing?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Tim.

A lot depends on your method of planking, the thickness of your planks, and the depth of the concaves.  Bending flat wood to a curved shape is always a bit of a challenge.  I've seen hollow wood boards with double concaves.  The one below is a kit from woodsurfboardsupply.com

HWS from woodsurfboardsupply.com

my first HSW has a 4mm ply bottom deck - cut the ribs to the required profile then used shims to push the ply to shape:

used gorilla glue for this, then titebond 3 for everything else. no problems so far (3 years ago) pic is from the middle looking towards the tail, so concave in the last third or so.

pretty straightforward to do it using strip planking and take your time = do middle two to meet at the stringer and work out from that. i think thats how the board in hucks post was done and it looks sweeeet

Thanks , fortunately the concave doesnt look too bad so will probably shimmout when gluing . Q when gluing up base planking a rocker table as a clamping point is a must?

I don't think a rocker table is mandatory, but I do think some type of solid surface as an anchor for the project when attaching the first deck (top or bottom) is a good idea.  Otherwise, hollow wood surfboards can twist, or even lose rocker, when bending and glueing the deck.

Here's a photo I lifted from woodsurfboardsupply.com - they attach the frame to the workbench with small pieces of wood and hotglue, then glue the decks up piecework.  Once the deck is complete, the board is cut loose from the workbench.

I've even heard of HWS twisting from just sitting too long before glassing.

If you're going to glue the deck up first, then attach it to the framework, a rocker table is gonna be a big help.

My system is a little different, I glue up my decks piecework rather than all at once, and I start with the rails, so there is less tendency for anything to move.

Thanks Huck , i think i will knock one up it will make gluing up planks with rocker easier.
