I’m in new board mode again, a fungun, and I’m thinking of switching from Pearson Arrow to Doug Haut. I like the fact that he still shapes ALL of his customs and has been using the same in house glasser for 20+yrs. Does anybody have a Haut and or opinions of this shaper? Thanks- John

He’s as competent as anyone in these parts. I think he understands the dynamics of surfboard design as well as anyone as well. Personally, the reason I haven’t ever gotten a board from him is that is Doug way or … I’ll let you finish that one. I have my own ideas about what I what and I think that it’s worth while finding a shaper that’ll listen to you. Everybody’s got their own ideas about what they want. So shop around talk to a few guys in the area. No plugs here for anyone. But if you want email me I’ll share some more opininon with you. Be sure to talk to Doug cause it could that he’s your man. No question that his work is of the highest quality, and I’ve got allot of respect for him. Good Surfin’ Rich

I bought a high performance longboard from him and was prety stoked on it, but I already sold it. I have always ridden a short board and was not into riding a long board like a short board. anyway, the board was beautiful and extremely well made. It performed well (although I’m not the best judge of longboard charateristics due to limited experience). I would say go to his little shack on Swift and have a talk with him. I know the lead time on board can get a little long, but he does quality work and has been shaping forever.
Doug is a great guy,a great shaper,a fine human being. His wife Suzy is as kind as can be.I’ve never had a custom made but all his boards that I’ve had, borrowed or just seen seem outstanding. His glass shop is really quality oriented.Heck, even the ding guy at Haut is tops.Their shop is a real surf shop not a clothing store.First rate class acts.Doug surfs pretty darn well too.I think he’s 62.May we all age so well. P.S. if you can talk fishing or hunting when you order it helps
P.S. if you > can talk fishing or hunting when you order it helps Funny you should mention this because his wife who you mentioned, who is super nice, said that he fly fishes and ties his own flies as do I! Hmmm…do I hear a discount? -John

Great quality, with Mike doing the glassing, one of the best, if not the best in Nor Cal. Doug’s boards have always worked well for me. Other obligation’s have me riding board’s from other shaper’s, but I would not hesitate in ever ordering a board from Doug. Any problem’s with his boards, I would put on the rider, not the board. Go ahead, talk with him, be honest regarding your abilities, and enjoy the ride.
