dropping in on a hip replacement

so after wringing out every last remaining vestiage of cartlidge, and some of the bone as well,

time for out with the old and in with the new, what will be the first of two at some point.

Going with the ceramic ball within cross linked poly socket,

the new gold standard for athletes who stress their hip

and need the replacement to last.

Interviewed ortho surgeons  here in Oregon that do the anterior process using the Hanna table,

and went with the guy who seemed the most stoked about the work.

I mean, nothing worse then a bored shaper, right?

Now with less then 2 weeks to go

been riding as many waves as I can this fall,

kinda like a squirell storing up nuts for a long winter.

For those interested, will report back on the process and outcome.

Lot of us who worked and played hard, paid some ortho dues.

The stories of how we got in this condition

are all about the ride.

Good luck and God’s speed.  Know of one guy who had both done.  Actually he had three.  The first one was one of the defective solvent on the ball replacements.  Maybe he shouldn’t have, but the guy was up and surfing on the first one in about two weeks and the second one in about a week.  He didn’t have any probs, except for the replacement.  But I wouldn’t rush it.  Rest up and heal.  By the Grace of God and if the Lord Wills; no hip or knee replacements in this lifetime para mi.

I hope it all goes well for you.  Strange when we start wearing out, so many thoughts and emotions can fill our minds, so I hope your at peace with this, and the outcome allows you to ride many more waves.  Nevertheless, someday it is my hope to put off this body, and be given an eternal celestial body that doesn’t wear out or fatigue; that’s the hope I have with my Savior, and He is the foundation of that hope.  May The Lord grant you a speedy recovery, and may your surgeons hands be at his best, and his mind focused on doing this task with the utmost precision.

News story about a friend who still rips after two hip replacements.

In 04 had a resurf. A miracle. surfing indo 7 months post op. forgot i had an implant. fast forward to jan 12. I had the other one done. Bad mechanic. Everything out of line. 2 years of hell. Nov 4 revised to ceramic, plastic, poly. Off crutches in 2 weeks. Went to PT. he pushed me too far. Clunking started again. 2 days later I did a slight leg extension and next thing I knew I was on the ground. Hospital via ambulance. Party in the ER , closed reduction , came home, seemed like a non event, except now I’m freaked that every time I go to stand up Ill have an anterior dislocation. I hear about these miracle recoveries where people are surfing weeks after surgery? Beware bros…My Advice, forget that. Just walk , stationary bike, and light swimming. take your time…before getting into radical strength training . Anyway, surgeon says I am set back 3 months and no more PT.

First good luck , second , didn,t anyone ever tell you , never volunteer , and that includes having your hip replaced , dont ask how I know .

thanks for the postives, much appreciated.

lot of the damage caused by a few decades of snowboarding

the steep and deep out of bounds.

Or as a oft injured young pro said after retiring from competition,

‘snowboarding is evil’…lol

Anterior process is the best for minimizing dislocation.

However, still got to take it easy, PT, spin, gradually increase weight program.

Doc has worked with other surfers, one I talked to.

He was surfing 6 weeks after surgery.

Personally, plan on 3 months of rehab to build to full strength.

Have some fun projects lined up during the down time,

and always enjoy watching winter storms pound the Oregon coast…

find it interesting that people posted less than 2 weeks and back on the water after hip replacement that is amazing.Know 3 people that had it done one cannot surf anymore one still does and one never did but all took months at least 3 or more for rehab.Myself  have elected to go with stem cell prolotheraphy been into it for 6 months now, had to stop surfing more matting laying down, probably out for a year to really surf hard, have longboarded about 2 or three times3/4 waves out of the water after about four months but still taking it easy.i am of the belief that nothing can replace what the creator has given us and the future of medicine will be less evassive.Orthos only know one thing replace thats their lively hood.My view is do your due dilegence and exhaust all avenues before you go under the knife. If you feel the groin ,femur nerve, or hip pain not necesarily all at once go get it looked at  not just x ray but mri.The longer one waits the more damage to soft tissue prolotheraphy could help like anything not for every case.Seeing results but progress is slow but steady, patience is the mantra but if i relate to 6 months ago way better but not the 100 percent that i want. The mind plays interesting things with your body and pain is real but focus on healing proper diet right exercise and so forth.Hips are hard cause you got to walk all that wieght bearing so progress is slowand work.I wish you well in your journey to your health, aloha…

Aloha,…

A few years ago I met up with a guy who had both hips done at the same time in the line-up at Tamarindo’s rivermouth,…a New England based gent who did alot of snowboarding.

His big challenge was straddleing his boad,…the sitting separation.

—others I’ve known have had difficulty because they did not rehab properly.

Hope all goes well and you’re back doing what we all love.

Aloha, Randy

I 'waiting  for someone to scan a hip device to it to their home made cnc machine. Make it with RR expoxy or better yet have Coil make it ( more flex or so I’m told.

I found that to be challenging also.      Could only sit for a minute at a time.     Took about a year before the discomfort was gone.    Now, like it never happened.

hi, i had both hips done over 5 years ago ,both metal on metal total hip replacements ,the first one is/nt as good as the second one in that i still have a bit of nerve pain in that thigh area ,sometimes its worse than other days and my mobility is a bit less than it was  my second hip just feels like a normal hip , never have an issues with it at all ,

i think its more down to surgical skill than the actual type of hip joint itself , the best type of joint fitted by poor skilled surgeon may never be as good as it could be ,

the first hip i had done  is my leading leg on my pop up and i can/t get the knee right up into my chest so have to twist it slightly to get my leg up but i can surf fine again were at one stage i never thought i would ever surf again ,

i did surf about 6 months after the first hip but it realy took about 12 months for everything to feel back to normal again ,

i would say try not to overdo your rehab ,be patient and if the surgeon has done his job well you will be surfing easily once more ,

its easy to take for granted what we have done for so long ,to get back in the sea and catch a realy good wave on a special day at your favourite spot on a board that you made yourself in your down time when you think your surfing time was over is just and unbeatable feeling ,

i hope your operation and recovery goes well and you are back doing what you love soon ,take care

After years of stiffness and pain I had metal on metal resurfacing done to right hip in sept 2012. It is COLD where I live so waited till spring before hitting the water. Lots of physio over the winter, walking stretching etc but no impact stuff. Stiff to start with but now at 14 months on feels better than it had for years before. Still get aches etc after a 3hour session but hey, who cares. Can ride both my logs and fish style shorties (all home made of course in proper swaylocks manner).

So to sum up…best thing I ever did.

that was an interesting few days

best thing to do whenever you find yourself in a hospital

is to leave as quickly as possible

now just time and work until the next paddle out

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Hope it goes well for you icc.  Mike

I have question for Icc

I am thinking to have hip replacement surgery too.
