hey guys i have a slight problem… i am 17 and am shaping out of my parents garage. i started shaping my first board this past weekend and i am using a random orbital sander. there is foam dust all over my garage and i vaccumed for 30 min to get it contained but it barely helped. is there any attatchment for a random orbital sander that can attach to a shop vac so that dust wont get everywhere? i saw something a while back but i couldnt remember the name… any suggestions? oh yeah my mom is gettin all pissed b/c the garage is covered in foam and she says i wont be able to shape in the garage anymore if i cant get the dust under control… i would get a planar but this is my first board and i dont have a lot of money… i’ll post pics tonight of the dust… also, hw do you guys get the dust off after your done shaping? b/c i need to get through the house to take a shower so i need a way that i can get the dust of before going into the house? is there anything that i could wear? cause it seems like the dust gets everywhere nomatter what i wear…
Personally I wouldn’t use a sander to shape, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a planer, a cheap one will do the job if your starting out. A cheap plane will cost about $20-40.
What ever tools your using you can hook them up to a vac if it that has an exaust outlet, some tools come with a little bag that attaches to this, these are petty much useless but better than nothing.
All you have to do is get some pipe/hose right size to connect to the tool and glue or tape them together.
It won’t stop the dust completely, just leave it an hour to settle and sweep it up with a stiff broom and dust pan.
I brush down my cloths or use a compressor to get the dust off, you could also keep a set of overalls + shoes down the garage to wear over the top of your normal cloths and change out of them before going back in the house.
hey fella,
no way to get out of the dust problem, we all have it. best thing would be to use hand tools only or hook up a cheap planer to a vac - but dust will still be an issue as the planer is only one step in the process. How bout covering the inside of the garage with tarps/sheets etc to keep the dust off stuff…tell mum not to stifle your creative genius…
hey bud…
are you shaping eps or polyurethane?
Polyurethane dust is easily removed in my experience… it reminds me of sand.
EPS dust is freaking malignant! It is particularly heinous this time of year in the northern hemi–cold seems to promote ‘static cling’ or something. Check out this method for dust removal.
I think you’d be better off using hand tools over a orbital sander for shaping. I used duct tape once to affix a shop vac hose to a small surform. It worked great, just a little slow and unweildy once you get accostomed to the speed and precision of power tools. Try it out if you’re on the edge of getting banned. I could not shape in the garage with power tools… my wife would have a stroke.

Or you can hang the tarps around your shaping area like temporary walls to catch a lot of the dust. Then use lots of hugs, kisses, compliments, dishes, poop scooping, whatever it takes to keep mom smiling. Mike
Hey Nova,
Move your operation to the far corner of the backyard. I hate surforms, but if it’s the sander vs the surform…the surform wins.
When your done you can do some gardening for ol’ mom. Use the rake, hose down the bushes, pull a few weeds maybe get a bag of fresh bark to put over the area. Do some up keep, and she’ll have nothing to bitch at. But best to stay out of the garage…It’s tough enough when your married to someone, you don’t stand a chance vs. Mom.
Get the shape roughed in as much as possible outdoors I mean, thickness, bottom contours, rail bands etc…, then move it the garage for the tuning of the rails and whatnot.
If your mom thinks the shaping is bad, just wait till you glass.

Where are you located? You can use my bay if you like?

If you’re shaping EPS you can cut down on a lot of the dust by using masking tape to mark off the edges of your rail bands and then running a coolish hotwire down the tape to cut your rail bands.
I’ve also seen a link to a drywall hand sanding tool that you can attach to a shopvac if you want to go all out on stopping the dust. I think oneula posted it a while ago, wasn’t too expensive $US16 maybe?
novasurfer,
Sway folks are some of the best people i have met. really generous with knowledge, tools, materials, etc…
i have a feeling that adding your location to your profile might just fix your problem…
maybe it’s a long shot… maybe not…
if you’re near me, you’re welcome to come by and shape on my back deck under my popup tent… it’s not
really the ideal shaping bay but it works…
i even have tools you’re welcome to use.
EDIT: oops, i didn’t read surfding’s reply before i posted… there you go right there. more sway’s stoke…
right on surfding.
thanks for the offer bro but i live in northern VA right outside DC… but i’m thinking of going to college at cal state fullerton or UC irvine in 2010 so if i do i’ll def hit you up b/c i’ll die w/o being able to shape… only my first board and im hooked…
everyone else, thanks for all the info.
woody waverider: where can i get a planar that cheap?
theboys: im using eps (same stuff that project frog used, Sheltersheath home eps insulation sheetsl)
muhleder: thanks for the info im looking for his post right now… i think thats the thing i was thinking of…
Try ebay, i have found so much stuff there that would cost me an arm and a leg to buy from a store.
I think this is the one I was thinking of,
http://www.amazon.com/Marshalltown-VS792-Vacuum-Sander-Hose/dp/B000VXBYPQ
or this on ebay looks similar

Try looking in the large harware department stores, at their cheapest ranges, or own bands, budget staors also sometime carry cheap tools but quality can be an issue. Ebay or craiglist is a good bet too. You can also get reconditioned units from the manufacture at a cut price, these are returns that have been fixed and are resold cheap.
