Well, I’ve got one for you. I have a yellow-ish(painted foam in plank falsa balsa) board I’m building and want to dye the gloss coat with a combo of red and amber or just the amber dye to achieve more of a redish brown varnish effect. Also, I’m adding some artwork (poster paint pens) to the board just before the gloss coat. So, there you have it. Crazy? doable? Thanks.
i think its acheivable, not sure if I would do it in a gloss coat however. have you already laminated it? If not i would consider doing it in the lam coat. my only concern is trying to acheive the color and gloss, having to do the finishing sanding may make it difficult to get the effect you are looking for. it will also give it a ‘deeper’ look and perhaps make the board itself look varnished as opposed to the top layer tinted on another color foam.
also you said ‘dye.’ you are using tint as opposed to pigment correct?
yep, already lammed. and yep a dye as suggested by Tap. So this will be interesting to say the least.
then i would recommend 2 more coats. do the tint in the hot coat, sand it to smooth perfection, than squeege a gloss coat over it and buff it out.
If the dye is only in the gloss coat, I would have concerns about some or all of it sanding off when you finish sand and polish…and it probably would not come off evenly which would be a bit of a bummer…
