Excellent inexpensive way to get colored fins
for your board. Buy the white plastic (FCS composite- really glass
filled nylon) or any make of the composite whitish color plastic fins.
Next 220 sand off the glossy finish in the same direction of the base.
Hold the fin up to a light or the sun to make sure there are no glossy
spots left. Sand 220 to dull finish. Put 2 inches deep of the hottest
tap water you have in a 5 gallon bucket. Buy Rit liquid dye in the
color you like. Wear latex/rubber Gloves. Pour 1/2 the bottle in the
hot water. Stir with a disposable plastic spoon. Slowly put the fins in
the bucket, curved leading edge of the fin against bucket wall, flat
side down. Leave fins in the dye for 1 hour or more to get the desired
color saturation. I kept mine in the sun to stay warm. When color
saturation is reached, rinse of with cool water, air dry on paper
towel. Looks pretty good for a $3.00 bottle of dye, some elbow grease
and 2 IPA Ales. Now for some shrimp on the bar
