I just shaped a 10-4 LB from a clark 10-7H. The board is 24 1/2" wide with fairly meaty rails. I wanted to do a resin tint but the 30" cloth only wraps about one inch onto the deck a the wide point. I’m concerned about the structural integrity of a skimpy lap as well as the esthetics of a narrow lap. I don’t have a local source for wider surfboard quality cloth. Anyone have a creative solution ? Thanks
I had the same problem with a 10’4" longboard at first. I marked were the cloth would end then flipped the blank over to see there were the other side overlap would end. I found the overlap to be enougth. 10 Years ago, I taped the rail of board with what I though was same glass. Mistake!!! If you are going to tape the rail cut it from the same material. There is no safe or easy way to build it right…

Anyone have a creative solution ? Yes. laminate a +/- 6" width of cloth around the rails and let it cure. Then laminate the board with a narrow lap.

Rob, this is also a good technique for strengthening a stringerless blank when you lay it up. The added cloth in the center gives it a bit more grunt without adding too much weight or stiffness. (Extra glass going around the rails is what really stiffens up a board, for better or worse.)
