Early 1960s Gordon and Smith Paddleboard- San Diego Surfing Association?

nice day here- i hope it is the same wherever you are.

i found a 10’6" early 60s Gordon and Smith Paddleboard. i guess it is from around 1961 or
62. it has the original pigmented gel coat with a couple comp stripes
around it and the name “san diego surfing assoc.” pigmented on the
bottom. 2" of balsa down the middle. It has several bb sized pukas and
a small corner ding but is otherwise in very nice original condition. i have never seen a G&S paddleboard before- i guess it was made for the surfing association to use in the paddleboard races that often run with surf contests. does anyone remember this board or have any info about it or the san diego surfing association? thanks!

10’6"? The photos make it look like it’s about 14’. Must be the perspective. Nice find!! I think the dark colored lam might help narrow down the date. I’m pretty sure they switched to red only, at some point. There was also a period when the logo had La Jolla at the top, and Dana Point on the bottom. That would be around 1962.

10’7" i put the tape on it. i feel a little funny about having it- it seems like a museum piece or emotionally important to somebody.

I’d be curious about the weight. I have a 10’2" Hobie that weighs 32 lbs, and it is a beast. Can’t imagine what that thing weighs. Of course, a tandem board from that vintage would be even more of a tank.

not bad- i guess around 30lbs. it was a struggle to get it in the shed so it will have to wait to be weighed- maybe tomorrow. i get the sense that this board will surf alright for a paddleboard. i’d love for it to go to someone who has history with it and G&S.

i have an 11’3" skip that weighs in at 33 lbs- a graceful beast she is.

The lam is from 1964. They only used that lam that color one year which makes it very easy to date. Nice score!!

30 lbs even. Not too bad! JW- thanks for the info on the lam. The board is in pretty fine shape for a 45 year old.
