Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund

cool idea! wonder if ya’ll decided to make a contribution under the “swaylock fund” isf so let me know, sorry you gotta kinda spell out whats goin on for me, im new.wish they would have a "surf for relief " day here on kauai. that would be great, all proceeds collected and sent over also donations collected im sure that one of the establishes organistaions here on kauai would help organise it, or even do the shipping for us. one full day of fun sun and surf, hopefully collect a lot. and the kauai communtiy would be so stoked on it . i know they would. especially if held out in hanalei on a weekend. keep me posted. hobcawannie *

Hey hobcawannie! the first Swaylock’s contribution has already gone in, but it’s easy to donate, lots of places if you haven’t already.

I think a “surf for tsunami relief” event on Kauai would be awesome and I’d be the first one on a plane over there to join in! I’ll donate a board too, if someone over there cares to organize such a thing…

Kauai Swaylockers??? Pick a day…

alright! i got a response… woooooo. this is fun. man, wouldnt that be cool though i bet ya’ll could talk a few people into getting involved in that around here. ya know what i wonder? how many people on kauai are a part of swaylocks discussion forum. proabbly a lot more than i think. i only know one. ambrose. may take me a little time but i should go see who already organises these things. hmmmmmmm. thanks for the reply ill be sure to remeber a donated board if i can get some leads. great donation. keeping you posted hobcawannie

why don’t you post your idea as a new thread, call it ATTENTION KAUAI SWAYLOCKERS or something like that.

I talked to a buddy of mine this morning and he’s up for a trip over there. I think there will be enough interest. I can probably arrange T shirts & help with raffle sales. I know Kokua has organized surf contests at Hanalei before. And I bet Ambrose would help out somehow…

Howzit Keith, Off the top of my head I'd say there are at least 6 Swaylockians here on Kauai. I think it was last year that Ambrose talked about a Swaylocks meeting here at the Ymca in Haena. In the next 4 months I have 4 contests to deal with so timing could be an issue but I am willing to do my part. If we are talking about a contest then there are some things to consider: getting a permit which we would need insurance to get and getting an open weekend since there are other contests besides the 4 I'm involved with. Also Mother Nature has to accommidate us with some nice waves and hopefully summy weather, which we haven't had a lot of this year. Aloha,Kokua

very kooool keith!

l;ast night afteri read your email i jotted some stuff down . ya know people who might be willing to donate cool surf accesories, boards, even ive worked a in a places up in a hanalei who would help out too. Atthe moment im selling things like helicopter tickets, boat crusies, surf lessons. id be so stoked if i could get them to donate a free activity here onthe island. also i was thiking of a few free rooms in a couple resorts. spa packages…kooool. but the best would be tamba, kai kane, the wave, ambrose’s kapuna etc… even off islanders as yourself, you are so generous! i gotta go see ambrose today beacause i took photos of him and my boyfriend riding mats last week. so ill breeze it by him. you should come over and help me! id love it!! oh yah, raffletickets blah blah. i think i could organise all that junk , i need to find out who kokua is . investigation is on. over and out . hobcawannie

Howzit hobcawannie, Kokua here, I live and work in Haena, where are you located on Kauai? You must work at one of the activities centers. Aloha,Kokua

hey?1!!! i was just looking for you… hahaha. im in kapaa. i live kawaihau road. its my day off. what do you think about keith’s idea? would this be a tough thing to pull off? my only question is do i need permission ?and if so from who? and where do you suggest having an all day event like this . ? hanalei, of course???so many questions i know. i know that i could organise all of the raffling and gifts . i do get time off enough to be able to do such as this. as well as setup and clean up and give kkcr a call, you name it! it’s just im kind of a nobody around town. because ive only lived here for a little over 2 years so im not sure if the locals will understand or trust whats goin on bc they dont know so well. but like i said i worked in hanalei and made some great friends with some wonderfull locals there who own business’s all of whom im sure you know and consider family…what do you think??? im ready to work hard to do a cool thing like contribute to this relief fund and a community only benefits when they are brought togehter to do a generous thing. point me in the right direction and let me know about some of the hurdles ill need to jump! thank you kokua

Hey Kokua, maybe it would make sense to just do this at (or near) the same time as one of the other contests?? Instead of setting up another one… Swaylocks is not really contest-oriented anyway. We just need a bunch of people getting together, doesn’t have to be in the context of competing. Maybe we should just have a Swaylocks Tsunami Expression Session, eh?

Howzit Keith,I talked with hobcawannie yesterday and we came up with basically the same conclusion. One big reason not to have a real contest is we would have to get a permit and in order to get one we would have to get insurance and show the county we had it before they would give us a permit. Now if we just have a get together expression session there's no requirments. We would need to put together a time frame and hobcawannie is up to doing a lot to help when it comes to raffle prizes. The only other problem I can see is who can and will come over for it since not every one can afford a ticket to Kauai. Aloha,Kokua

That makes sense to me too. Well I don’t want to invade your turf, just wanted to offer to help, participate, and drag over as many mainlanders as might be persuaded…but if the point is to raise $$ for tsunami victims, that can be done a lot of ways – raffle tickets (we can sell them here too, even bring prizes back for winners), auction items, we can collect some here and send/bring them over…cash donations if anyone wants to chip in… as I said, I can donate a board, maybe 2 for the auction… I don’t think you need a lot of mainlanders for the expression session (maybe the fewer the better, ha ha, you know those California “manners”…) but it would be nice to get a good crowd together for the auction somehow if that’s possible…

Again, whatever you all want to do, it’s your island. But I’m sure there will be at least a few of us willing to help. Not to mention we just MIGHT be excited by the very good excuse to come to Kauai!

aloha,

Keith

Howzit Keith,First of all don’t worry about an invasion of our turf, would rather have the boys from Swaylocks here any time. We also have quite a few Swaylockians on the other Islands who would probably like to participate. I think we could also get some of the local boys to help and it would also introduce them to this site. When I tell people about Swaylocks they always are a little surprised to hear that there is such a website and ask for the site address.

An excuse to come to Kauai, nobody should need an excuse to visit paradise. On another note we got over 10 inches if rain last night and the Hanalei and Wainiha bridges were closed today. Myself and one of my shapers were the testers for a policeman to see if Wainiha could be crossed and we made it but we stalled twice but made it, but that was enough to convince the police to close the bridge. they finally opened it after a couple of hours and we were able to get back across to get home. Hanalei bridge is still closed and the surf is good and hardly any one out, water is pretty ugly though. As far as the Tsunami relief is concerned count me in and now lets work on a time frame. Aloha,Kokua

Howzit Kokua, sounds great. And you’re right, no excuse is necessary… let me know what you think might be a good time frame to shoot for, and if anyone else out there is interested in helping out, send a PM or post here…

aloha,

Keith

Howzit Keith, hobcawannie called me yesterday about it and she is very eager to help since she works at an activities center and has a lot of contacts for freebies. We need to get the rest of the boys and girls here to help us determine a time frame since they will be a part of the shindig and what is a convenient time frame for those who are interested in coming over. Since it’ll be in basically my back yard anytime is the right time and I would like to see as many Swaylockians here as possible. Only one of the four contests I’ve got to do in the next couple of months is a 2 dayer so we can do it on a Sunday if we want. First we need to find out who is interested in coming and start there for a time frame.Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua - I was thinking, maybe it would be good to have a couple raffles, one for shapers stuff (tools blanks etc) and one for surfer stuff (boards clothes etc).

Maybe we should have a pre-event raffle, and one of the raffle prizes would be a ticket to Kauai.

eh?

How many of you out there would risk $10 on that?

Aloha, It takes alot of energy to add the extra love to others , I’m proud to hear these stories ! Hat off to love thy neighbor !!!

Aloha !! Clyde

howzit Kokua & Hobcawannie - any feedback yet on likely timing or other updates? mahalo,

Keith

Howzit Keith, Well nobody seems to posting any resposes as far as when and if they can make it to Kauai. Maybe nobody is checking this thread and we need to start a new one that reads " Let’s have a Tsunami relief party on Kauai" That might stir up some posts. Aloha,Kokua

you got it, stay tuned…

Hi Keith, Kauai huh? you don’t have to twist my arm… any word on timing yet?

peace,

Brennan
