last weekend we had great surf. and has been steadily good through the week. im curious to know what the rest of the coast looks like from hatteras, to tybee island, TUNA? And everything in between.
im actually kinda stoked on the surf here. It obviously doesnt compare to kauai but Another guy out in the water the other day said that it would get a lot better then what we were surfing. maybe he was exhagerating. that day it was shoulder high with a few head high sets. probably 15 minutes in between. glassy, i couldnt believe that, and really fun.
I’ll tell you what was the best part, where in hawaii the surf was good often but for some reason people were more anxious to catch as many waves as they could even though they’ll be catching it close to as good for the next few days or however long the swell is gonna hang around. isle of palms surfers are so gratefull for the surf and have a “permagrin” the whole experience out in the water that they are giving the waves to other surfers to watch there faces and there fancy moves on there boards. it takes so much longer to master hangin 10 here than it does in other surf spots where the surf is good all the time.
the water has been around 80 degrees and makes surfing in the late evening from 5 till 8 real heavenly like. your bathtub with waves. so it seems hurricane season has hit early this year from what everyone says. i hope it keeps up. i would love to hear what the surf is like all around the east coast. spill it!
South Jersey had some fun surf this week, as well as bathtub temp. water. Solid waist high, occasionally a bit bigger in AC. On a nice day in the summer that is all ya need! It’s nice and flat right now, we’re hoping to squeeze a little swell out of Franklin, though he’s a little far and heading out to sea already.
It’s good to hear your East Coast hosts are treating you to a good vibe.
Yeah up here in Maine we had waist+ sets. I’m just happy that we finally got something up here. I’ve been so pumped about surfing lately but there hasnt been any.
I live on Hilton Head, SC, and the surf has been really fun here the past few days.
Yesterday morning, Saturday the 23rd, was all time. Me and my 3 friends surfed a secret little creek mouth/jetty break all to ourselves, chest-head with some overhead sets, and no wind from 7am-10am, and then light offshores until 12 when I was too tired to surf and left. This spot was wedging up really good, I got probably around 10 barrels all day, and I was just on, linking cutbacks to snaps to floaters, everything just clicked.
there is the buddy pelletier memorial longboard contest in Atlantic Beach which is about an hour and 15 minutes from wilmington (happening in a week or two). A bar here called red dogs puts on a contest every summer that should be happening soon, not sure when though.
-check out www.eastcoastsurf.com they will be able to help you out better than i will
I used to live in Columbia, SC and when there was swell i would hit it up. Didn’t get much of a chance due to my younger age but when i got the chance it was a blast.
I am visiting, say in 2 months, where are some places i should go if i get the chance to visit?
not many pics from the contest have been put up, and i didnt take any while i was there because i was surfing most of the time, and sleeping in between heats, i guess ill link you to some when they get posted
i got a new camera and ive been wanting to snap a few. i just gotta figure out the scanning part. i should have bought a digital, i know. anyhoots. i drove out to folly last night and the surf is still clean but little but ended up surfing out isle of palms again. i like it there. i hope a good swell comes in so that i can show off how nice and sizey the surf has been lately. we’ll see give me a couple days,
cool! atlanttic city, how far a drive from charleston s.c. is that? that would be neat. if too far i’ ll hit the one in wilmington.
Just for clarification, atlantic city is in dirty jersey. Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle area is probably a 4 to 5 hour drive from charleston and a 1 to 1.5 hour hop from wilmington
you really should have been here for the Wrightsville Beach Pro-Am, even rob machado showed up
im thinkin about heading towards hilton head this weekend with some fellow surfer friends. probably saturday night, then wake up early sunday morning for surf all day. do we know if there is a swell coming in this weekend. i havent surfed there but im assuming that ill find out where those jetties are by simply driving around a bit.
if thats not the case let a fellow surfer know if you dont mind. i made a couple phone calls this morning after reading swaylocks. im stoked. i cheked the cam over here …glassy 2.5 to 3 feet.its a nice day not too hot. im gonna surf this evening.
Karate kid nerd hero, Ralph Macchio. Don’t know if he surfed. He made better movies than Karate Kid. Check out The Outsiders, some others of notable worth.
Confirm: Atlantic City NJ. If you like Las Vegas East and some sleaze. Spent summers there as a kid, pre-“modernization,” miss the diving horse, dressing up for the boardwalk evenings and genteel ways of the past. Taffy to chew forever and more fudge than I could eat. Different kinds of candy when I went to college in Philadelphia and drove to AC on weekends. I’m kook today, but I caught my first waves there, on an old canvas mat, age 5, 6, 7, 8? hell I can barely remember, but I have this ultra clear vision in my head of the view of the beach outside the now-long-gone Shelbourne Hotel, this clear, bright, view from the water of the hot white sand. And that’s the better reality than today, I think.
hobcawannie: I wouldnt come to Hilton Head, if there is surf, it will be much better at Hunting Island, east of Beaufort, or folly beach.
If you do come to HHI, you will find it is the most un-beachy town ever, especially for a town that thrives on beach going tourists. Once you get onto the island, stay on business 278 and keep driving until you see “Chaplin Community Park”, go down that road, dont pay the meters, no one ever does. Youll see the jetty/rocks Im talking about, no one goes there though because everyone is too fat and lazy to paddle their 48 foot log down there…
yea, new hanover county beaches get the most consistent surf in the summer for SNC…it also turns into a surfer’s nightmare with the hordes of kooks that invade every summer…we the locals for the most part are nice…i guess the same rules apply everywhere, give respect to get it…if you want to get some uncrowded surf provided that there is swell send me a pm and ill give you directions to a couple obscure but fun places
