EAST COAST SURFERS GET REAL WAVES!

Danielle was a lot of closeouts where we are up in Monmouth County, NJ, due to the swell direction. But Earl brought the goods. Well overhead, clean sets at many spots over a period spanning three days. The biggest day saw DOH + for surf for the better part of the day, with only a handfull of guys out at each spot. I think the best day was Saturday, with sets head high to a foot or two overhead and barreling. Many, many barrels that day.

A large set of photos from New York: http://robertcallanan.smugmug.com/SURFING-LONG-ISLANDNY/Hurricane-Earl-Friday-9-4-10/13616921_R8Nbq#993492039_DAge9

Igor swell, Long Island scores again!

http://toddmarti.com/blog/?p=834

The winds were not very cooperative here for Igor.  The first day of the swell was good but after that it was either side-shore or on-shore for the rest of the swell.  Perfect winds for New York and New England though.  Hoping to see lots of pictures from this swell.

There are places in NJ where a side shore south wind is of little concern.   After looking at some of the Photos  It has brought back great memories. It does not happen as often as most Jersey surfers would like but when it is good, Jersey can be one of the best places to surf.  Tons of jetties and sandbars that help produce some tasty treats,

a few more.....

A few shots a photographer got of my home break.  I was out durring this session and it was maxed out.  The beach breaks in my town can't hold much bigger than this.  It was cloudbreaking on offshore sandbars and was very very difficult conditions.  Click below for the full gallery.

Mako, you ever get up to AC to surf? with all the piers and jetties AC seems to be able to hold a larger swell then most other places i Know of in NJ.

I used to go over there a bit but the older I get the more lazy I get.  I live right down the street from a pretty good break and there are a number of good spots within a few blocks of home.  Those pictures above are of 1st and 3rd street and I live at 7th street.

I know that AC was smaller, cleaner and more managable but I can't stand AC.  I've had my car window smashed in and my stuff stolen by one of the AC natives a few years back.  The city is a dump.

If I am going to drive in search of surf I usually head up to Long Beach Island or points further North.

I Know what you mean, My nephew who lives close to AC has it wired knows where to park and all.  It is a pit and all the hype that the casinos would save AC was just that Hype.  It's a Sham.  One of my best days Surfing in jersey was in AC a place that use to be called gas chamber. this was early fall maybe 1974/maybe 1975 Hurricane was stilling off the coast and most of Jersey was out of control  gas chamber was working well over head.  My Family was very connected to AC for many generations. my Grandfather had commercial Fishing boats That ran out of AC in the 1930's   I grow up surfing LBI. Owned Freedom  Surf Shop in Beach Haven for many years.

As the crow flies the good surf spots in AC are only 10 miles away from my house. It still takes nearly half an hour to drive up there though.  Add to that the parking issue and crime.  AC also gets pretty crowded on a good swell.  It all adds up to make the 40 minute drive up the parkway to Ship Bottom all the more worthwhile.

Mako,

I recognized your first photo right away from surfer supplies website  Friday night of earl I didn’t make it out in Ocean City, where I normally surf, but I did make it out at whale beach in strathmere and there were some great waves

We have been pretty lucky with waves this year but lots of days full of closeouts down at the 59th street pier were I normally surf (can’t drive yet or I would be at First Street)

I didn’t know there was any other sways members that normally surf Ocean City, maybe i’ll see you out there one day

I live in the North End of town year round and do 90% of my surfing North of the Music Pier.  If you've spent any amount of time surfing in town you probably have been in the water with me.   Don't go to the south end very often since it doesn't break like it used to but I did surf in the Becker Contest a couple of weeks ago where we were treated to thumping close outs.

I was at the becker surf contest as well, I did not surf in it, but I was surfing at the south side of the pier all day so I know exactly what thumping closeouts you were talking about.  Do you happen to be one of the bleeders or one ones that came out with a concussion, ( i heard there was more than one).  I’m sure we have seen each other becuase I surf 1st and Waverly sometimes as well.

more good stuff in all 3 above...

No bloodshed for me but there were several broken boards and one of my buddies hit the bottom pretty bad and looked like he had been in a street fight.  That contest was a perfect example of why I don't normally bother with contests......it was held at a beach with conditions so bad that I never would have paddled out there under normal circumstances.  Durring my first round heat I don't even know how the judges would score it as it was totally unridable......both of my rides I pulled into closeout barrells and just prayed I wouldn't break my new board.

never underestimate today's kids...

We have had a really good run of solid surf here in NJ as evidenced in the pictures and links in this thread but today's remnants of tropical storm Nicole far and away brought the most fun surf.  Ditched out of work today and went to the spot pictured in the Igor swell pictures I posted earlier in this thread.  The waves were about three feet overhead with a howling offshore wind.  The waves were bowling on the takeoff then realing down the beach like Trestles.  Probably the best quality surf I have seen at my home break since the snow storm swells of last winter.  Best of all the crowds were non-existant.  My best session in at least a year.  I'm exhausted.  Good night.

A little video from yesterday October 1st.
