Egg rails and bottom core

hi, i am in the process of shaping board number 5 which is an egg…its dimensions are 8’0 x 17 x 15 x 21.5 (wide point 4 inches ahead of centre).

The kind of waves i’ll be surfing range from waist to head high reef breaks and headhigh more hollowish beach breaks.

I have a pretty smooth style and would like to glide along the waves rather than attack them.

I have had a look through the archives concerning the type of rail and bottom contours i should go with for this board.

Im a bit confused as some say egg/50/50 or 60/40 or tucked under rail more modern style like a thruster…

also with bottom contour, i was thinking of a vee at the tail, but am unsure as to where to place it and how far to run it into the tail. Ive heard that it should stop at the front of the fin and then have a nice flat tail for easy padddling - this makes sense to me - but what about concaves - like a double concave either side of the middle fin? also, i take it that its still the go to put a hard edge on the last 18 inches or so of rail up to where the tail ends?

Also, i was thinking of surfing it as a single fin with a nice big flexx fin…but maybe a box with side bites options might be more versatile?

The rocker is pretty flat with maybe 5 inches at front and 2.5 at back. But i havent finished shaping it yet so i could probably get some more rocker out of it if need be.

ive never made this type of board before and have so far made one fish and two big bloke thrusters and a 6’10 on its way too which is being built simultaneously with the Egg.

by the way, im 210 lbs. or so.

Thanks for any help in advance

anyone?

please?

The classic egg would have a rolled deck, thin round rails, slight roll in bottom, and just a clean,

flowing look to the whole package. Nothing angular or hard. This type of board should fit well

with your surfing objectives as you stated them.

Just try to make it as neutral as possible (box plus sidebites can help balance adjustment) and let

it find it’s own lines on the wave.

This one works for me in similar conditions. I’d add another inch of kick in the nose and pull the tail in 1/2 to 1 inch for steep beach break. Just scale it up. Just be sure the deepest part of the “v” is in front of the fin box and trails to dead flat off the tail block.
