Hey guys, its been a long time since ive posted but you guys were always the best for opinions so im back with a couple of questions. specifically for those guys that surf eggs. I have surfed longboards soley for now about 4yrs, selling my last shortboard about 2yrs ago. Anyways i was going through some of my boards and remembered a board I got a few years back, a 7’2" schroedel, i understand he has packed up shop?, anyways its shaped like a little performance long board with a fat little nose that looks like it could be ridden(haha thats the longboarder in me talking), its a tri fin square tail. I haven’t surfed this board more then 4-5 hours in its life! So, i thought what a better time to try the board a bit while i am waiting for a new longboard from junod. anyways my question is, what kind of waves are best for that kind of board in your experience, the most fun? so far my experience is the board goes well in a small point break but really isnt that hot in some other waves, what waves in particular? i am a pretty experienced surfer but not on smaller boards. thanks for any advice
We ride eggs in all types of small wave conditions. I love them on the South Shore reef breaks, sandbars and shore breaks. We make them wide, thick and we like the rails low and lots of nose rocker. I like them from chest high to a few feet over head. I like a floaty short board that I can still dip. I don’t like to use them in really thick heavy surf.
Thanks,
D
Ya… I have an 8 foot egg board, thruster set up, that’s at least 20 years old and I just took it out a few days ago. The thing works great in knee high-to-overhead surf, turns really hard, yet you can nose ride the thing. A lot of fun. Only I agree w/ Unc D, not fun to duck dive.
PS to me its not really an egg with a square tail, but that’s just nomenclature, it’s still a good shape.
Do you have any pics of it?
From your description, I can’t picture an egg. Does it look anything like this one? It’s a 7’4" mini-log that I made for my wife a while back. She is a longboarder but wanted to try something shorter so I came up with this. The shape works great on those knee to head high, soft point waves.
I’ve always considered an egg’s basic shape to be rounded nose with rounded pin tail, but I suppose it’s not written in stone. Aussies might disagree with me.
I heart Eggs. The most fun of all shapes. I love’m. you can take a egg to any break and it will work good. I’d rather be on a good egg than any potato chip or longboard… just my 2.
my lastest eggy type thing. 6’4".
Wow Ben, that’s beautiful!
Are those elevated wings? Have you ridden it yet? It looks like the wings are pulled forward slightly. howz it work for ya?
I’d love to ride that board.
i guess you would call it a mini-longboard here is a photo, might have seen it around thought about selling it for awhile but the posca painting i did on it has a little value to me, anyways im gunna surf this board a little more its nice to hear you guys like them
Yeah, a decent surfer can rip on almost any funboard, but the board doesn’t stroke you ego like a chip tri or a beatifully painted retro log.
Anything from thigh to arm’s reach overhead is easy and fun.
I have 4 - 8’ X 21 1/2" eggs, and I love them. They all have full rails that get hard about 1/3 from the tail, but they have different rockers and thickness. I’m making a 6’ 10" version now.
I’ve ridden my boards in everything from waist high slop to double overhead south shore. The ones with more rocker can handle the larger hollower breaks, and the flatter boards will glide along and make it through the flat sections. 2 are setup as 2 + 1 (I usually ride them as a single), the other 2 are single fin.
I wouldn’t use these boards when the surf is really good, but for everything else they’re great. They turn easily and paddle like a longer board. Great cruising boards.
I also have 6’ egg shape that can only be ridden from the tail. It’s made for thruster riders that want something different for smaller days. I used to like it a lot, but I enjoy moving around on the board more, and that board doesn’t like it when you step on the nose.
Here is my one and only “kind of " eggy shape . This here is my ill-fated “benzer bottom” p.o.s. board. It was 6’5” x 20" x 2 1/2". (I creased it on my third surf , in chest high waves . What a dufus !)
[…that’s the TAIL at the top of the photo , by the way …it’s not a “Tracker” board !]
So…
I don’t think I will do a stringerless board in 4oz top and bottom again …so much for my "flex " experiment hahahah (ooops !)
ben
I figured out a way to add images. Here’s egg #3 - 8’ x 21 1/2" x 1 7/8" about 4 or 5 inches of nose rocker and 3 inches in the tail (no exact measurments here, went by eyeball). It was a single fin, but I added 2 small sidebites to make it a 2 + 1 setup. It has a slightly rolled bottom and a bonzer double concave in the tail. This is balsa over 1lb EPS from home depot with a 1/2" redwood stringer.
Egg #2 has very little rocker, like 2" in the nose and 1" in the tail, but it’s about 2 1/2" thick. It doesn’t have a stringer.
Egg #4 is the same as #3, but it is about 2 3/4" thick and a flat bottom. I think I pulled the tail in a little and made it square. That one can handle pretty good waves. I’ve ridden it in 6’ faces at tennis courts (south shore Oahu). I’ve ridden this board here in 6’ faces at diamond head cliffs.
I made these boards to help when the waves are small, the break is crowded and there’s a lot of longboarders out. They paddle like a longboard, but turn like a shorter board. I was surprised that they did pretty good in the bigger waves.
