egg shapes

what kind of surf would an egg be good for and can it be ridden in larger surf like a shortboard as far as maneuverability?

it’s a bit broad to say. depends on too many things. but yes eggs can be even more manuvarable than shortboards and rode in larger waves.

if you have more specifics most could tell you a lot more though.

Obviously depends on dimensions of said egg and who is the pilot.

Biggest surf I"ve ever seen ridden in OBSF was done on a sorta egg… a 8’6" x 21 single fin ridden by LarryMcGraw in around '78 or so. Had a really wide nose, around 15", and a tail close to 15.

He and MikeCrook, riding another wide eggy shape, where the only ones to make it all the way outside that I saw.

I like to think eggs are good boards for alot of types of conditions. Not to short, not to long, more of an all around board. Of course, when i hear egg i think kind of a fun board shape, but could be different. I’ve definetly surfed big surf on fun shaped boards. Easier paddle than a standard short board but less maneuverable than, say, a semigun. Its all up to you…your skill level, type of waves your surfing. Of course, there are usually more efficient boards for specific types of surf, but if your just going out to set some lines and carve some turns, eggs are just as fun.

actually it´s not dane perlee it´s Jimmy Gamboa on a Pavel hull! i guess…

i like the one in the centre’s outline best.

that board jimmy is on is a liddle hull.

Rightcoaster,

What do you mean by “bigger surf?” Owned and ridden several over the years. I think they are great in surf up to 8 foot on the face when it’s not heaving and pitching. Cant’ imagine riding one at big OBSF. Lee’s friends must be exceptional surfers. Mike
