Roys wave

www.hawaiianwatershots.com

i’m anxiously waiting for the feedback and video/pics of this event…

it’s there…

with a photographer in tow…

apparently it’s been surfed by someone, somewhere and there are others lined up.

the internet is truly AMAZING.

I would like to see the show…Anyone know when this will happen…Not much surf now.

Roger

If Roys board is there and someone hasn’t tried it I would be shocked!!

Yeah if you guys could post a date I might jump on the ol airbus - gettin that time of year anyways,

Hows she look?? Shiver me timbers?

Good luck, stay safe!

… yeah right, that wood glistening in the Hawaiian sun, pipe roaring in the near distance.

It appears that the board is being ridden at the ‘‘WAIKIKI-PIPELINE’’, not the pipe’ on the NS. Water seeking its own level.

I guess we’re all in for a waiting period.

Is there any word on who the ‘‘test pilot/pilots’’ will be? Will there be any serious attempt to ride a wave/waves of consequence? By that I mean 8 foot or bigger Pipe’, or 10 foot or larger Sunset, or Laniakea same size? Those breaks should provide an adequate test of the speed capability, so loudly trumpeted.

Will there (please) be cameras present? I’m looking forward to the results, as I’m sure many others are. Believers, and non-believers, alike.

I hope we get a chance to see it. For better or worse. As you know though the Hawaiian waves have a way of telling us when its time to go.

The hype seems to have stirred some emotions,

The last couple of winters, guys have been successfully riding finless, low rockered, heavy, wooden hotcurl planks made by Jim Phillips…at some of the heavy North Shore breaks…not sure whether at Pipe.

I am quite sure that Roy’s board, at 30 lbs. with a fin and alot of rocker could work at many spots(with the right riders)…but Pipe is another matter. I think it could work on a bigger swell there by catching it way outside early and setting up for the pit. I have seen longboards ridden there that way…seemed to work fine.

You are correct, about a larger board allowing you an ‘‘early in’’, at takeoff. An ‘‘early’’ takeoff at Pipe’, is the equal of a way-late takeoff anyplace else. So,

there will some challenge involved. Survival, is not the goal, but the superior performance, that was touted. Absent superior performance, it’s a failure, IMO.

The design, and construction of the board, skillfully executed though it may be, is at best an improvement of the Blake, and Plank designs, of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Again, this my opinion, based on personal experience, riding a wide range of board sizes, on the North Shore. The intended testing ground.

looks like the board needs a bit of push if you read CMP and OTAY’s reviews on the blog. Be interesting to hear Bud’s and Neal’s take riding it in stormy Lani’s cause they are way smaller than CMP and Hawaiian.

it sounds like it’ll need someone strong around 150-160 lbs to get enough paddle speed to catch anything thick from the outside. Problem is spinning that thing around in time. Kind of like the old days I guess where you have to sit there almost with your back to the waves and wait. Could be a problem

Jim’s HC @ the pipeline. I’m not sure of how big this wave is, but the challenge is on when the waves show.

Awesome shots Skip…Cant wait for Dan Herlihy’s Hot Curl movie. I think he is on Oahu now…waiting for conditions for final footage,

Rogelio

Pronester - I’m certain Jim can call them Hot Curls, and I know the wood board Roy built isn’t an Olo. Take the fin off and Olo on Garth.

Maybe Kimo Hollinger could verify.

I have been a professional film/video cameraman for over 30 years. If I can fit the shooting around my 8-5 day job, I’d would happy to shoot video of the board being ridden here on Oahu.

Nice pic of JKP and the HC surf shot ain’t bad neither.

Jim was nice enough to fill me in on the story of shaping all those boards (a complete lineage of ‘‘modern’’ wooden

boards, from finless HC to '50s balsa) and gave me an overview of the film they were made for. All I can say is they

got the right man for the job. He in turn took it as a great honor to participate in the project. When you’ve spent

your whole life doing this stuff, it’s nice to have something to hang your hat on as well as honoring those who came

before. Someday those ‘‘replica’’ boards will be as valuable as any collector boards on the planet, IMHO. Can’t wait

to see the film.

Outlook through Saturday Nov 29: a large northwest swell is expected to arrive late Thursday, boosting surf heights to advisory levels on the north and west facing shores Friday, possibly exceeding warning levels Friday night into Saturday.

E-pac,

That is great news! If the subject board IS surfed at Pipeline, it MAY be historic as the longest board surfed there. Maybe size does matter. Maybe?

Let’s hope there are no injuries in this quest.
