epoxy and futures...

hello all,

I am on my seventh board and it will be my first epoxy and my first fish. I picked up my supply of RR and add F from the florida shop earlier today. My question is, when installing the futures fin boxes into the foam is it possible to paint and install the boxes and then, while still wet begin the lam. Or must I wait until the resin hardens before I can begin the lam.

Or is it possible to use an automotive type two part epoxy that sets quickly for the boxes.

With poly this was easy because I could mix up a hot mix to set the boxes and then move on. I am trying to avoid the wait between box install and lam. I am also trying to avoid the toxic environment of mek and acetone.

I have searched the archives and have not found a post that addresses this.

Thanks, Josh

Het Josh,

Down in Florida it’s pretty warm. With fast hardener R.R. epoxy should be rubbery in 30 to 40 minutes or sooner. As soon as it get’s stiff go for it, by that I mean check to see that the stuff has cured enough before you start squeegeeing the lamination. I’ve had best luck with epoxy glassing when the temperature is dropping cause it reduces off-gasing.

If you plan on starting in the afternoon maybe you can catch the weather just right.

Hope this helps.
