Epoxy and polyester…Shall the twain NEVER meet? I’ve been told you can gloss coat polyester OVER epoxy hot coats, True? Are there any other circumstances where the two can follow or precede one another? Thanks for the advice in advance.
I have great success using poly gloss over epoxy
I do this because it polishes better and easyer that epoxy
I havent experemented any further
its always best to keep the medias the same
my poly over epoxy lams all chipped off when encountering dings…they were more proned to chipping than if it was a consistent resin through and through.
meaning, if it was all epoxy, it wouldn’t have even dinged…if it was all poly, I’d have a shatter.
with poly over epoxy, the poly chipped away…the beneficial side effect was that the epoxy laminate always remained unharmed so it was good in the “breakaway” sense, but, negatively, it was really apt to chipping and shattering.
well you have to fix the ding anyway so use poly UV and fix the chip in 2 minutes
** polyester resin does not like uncured epoxy do it right & it works **. but why bother just use uv poly lams haa’’
Howzit Huie? If the epoxy is fully cured… then is poly still precluded or are the two compatible? Just how long does it take for epoxy to fully cure? Thanks for your advice and everyone else. Your expertise is greatly appreciated, Thanks Heaps!
ps. good on 'ya for your part in the ps v. pu experiment. All the best to Surfding also.
pps. What’s the best way to cure epoxy anyway?
Bonding issues....Do what ever you want...Do what you think is Right....
Here's how I do it.....

I gave it a few days before coating, but it certainly could have gone longer.
I have tried to use poly through and through, but my housemates and neighbors nearly ran me out of town!
Best way to cure epoxy??
Mix it right as per instructions (ratios are critical) then Keep it warm, 25 degrees is good. My epoxy longboard got a post cure of 8 hours at 50 degrees C. Having said that I work a lot with epoxy and the manufacturers tell me that so long as it eventually reaches its cure temperature for long enough then it will fully cure.
Thanks Heaps for the help
Stingray, thanks for the links. This was most informative and the link to the you tube video was great, but who has an oven to cure boards?? Surfding was real helpful too. This sharing of knowledge will only help to develop the craft even further. THANKS MUCHO!
ps. The '67 Corvette Stingray Roadster is the coolest car made.

I used to be a car nut. In 1965 the Corvette came out with the Big Block 396. In 1966 the Chevy SS 396 was born. I owned a SS 396 as a young man....In 1967 the Corvette 427 came out! Love the side pipes! Did they have 3 carbs in 67 or did that come later? Surfboard building has taken over my hot rod roots....much cheaper.
Now you got me thinking about Flames!
Summer is almost here! Forget about post cure! You don't need it in Ventura.
Hi S’Ray, In '67 the three carb was an option on the 427 cu. You’re right about the 396.A buddy bought a custom El Camino off the V.P. of General Motors Van Nuys, Ca. plant who walked the car through the assembly line. He had it balanced and blueprinted and when my buddy had it, it was faster than any stock big block around. We used to race home from work ( on L. A. freeways if you remember when it wasn’t always gridlock) and I still remember watching him disappear when traffic opened up. Good Times! Thanks again for your tips.
ps. The '60’s Stingrays are like a nice shape, they look like they are doing 90 mph standing still.
Poly hot coats on an epoxy laminate NO. Poly gloss over an epoxy hot coat is fine. Use the good ole Riechold gloss resin instead of Silmar hot coat resin when glossing. The Riechold sticks better.
Got it! thanks Greg for posting that. I think Fiberglass Hi. carries Riechold still.
