epoxy cutlap help please

another quick question guys,

ive just done my clear deck lam wrapping round to the bottom cutlap. bottom is tinted mid green. resin is surf source epoxy.

i left it a little too long before cutting the lap and as i sliced through with my blade the fibres have sort of torn up and released from underneath giving a milky appearance on top of the green. unfortunatly my masking wasnt even enough to cover with a pinline so im going to have to sand before i can hotcoat. how will i know it will go clear again under the hotcoat?

cheers

Not sure I understand completely, are you saying the lap released a little and turned milky? if so, you’ll have to sand/cut it out or it will delam later anyway.

If you mean the ends of you lap have gone white, try wetting them with some acetone before hotcoating, and they should disappear.

Thanks Royal,

yes the lap has released in places, ive had difficulty on dark colours before where ive sanded the laps and it has still shown through, the acetone idea is a good one but i dont have any to hand, would additive f work in a similar way? i know ill have to sand it but if i wipe the area once sanded with add f would this work?

thanks

loving your work by the way!

Not to be pedantic, but if the lap has released - meaning the glass has separated from the cloth below, you’re going to have to cut it out, or it will cause you problems later. This assumes its a large area, of course.

If it is just along the edge of the lap, additive f will make it go clear, but can also create a milky film over the area when it cures.

if you don’t have any acetone, nail polish remover is the same thing…

ive got to pop and get some pinlining tape in the morn so ill pick up some acetone while im out.

its not a big area at all, just sections maybe 10mm long along the lap and released maybe 5mm into the lap in a curve. ill try and get my photos downloaded tomorow to show what i mean. ive got a little dremel so will prob sand it out then wipe down with acetone before i hotcoat.

just got a real sweet hotcoat layed down on the deck, best one so far for sure, real flat.

cheers for the tips.

Hi -

You might try dabbing a touch of xylene or Additive F to the area followed by a quick dab of mixed epoxy. It’s an old trick used with styrene and polyester resin when doing ding repairs.
