Epoxy fiberglass

My humble apologies for any fax paus I may commit, I’m not a bulletin board or forum user but I was told to check this one out and it’s been a wealth of information and resources, Thanks!! Anyhowwww…

I’ve just finished the woodworking part of a 9’ hollow wooden board (laminated balsa rails, nose, and tail, and door mahogany deck and bottom) and have a couple of questions that I haven’t seen addressed in the epoxy fiberglass threads I’ve checked. All my research indicates epoxy over wood is the best bet and I’ll probably go with Fiberglass Hawaii 2:1 clear. I’m thinking of doing the laminations with epoxy then hot coat and gloss with polyester. I’ve been told that humidity is critical, is this true? Humidity in the wood itself or humidity in the atmosphere? Has anybody used epoxy over abalone? I have some puau abalone inlays on the deck. I’ll do some testing on test pieces first of course. Thanks

Hey Tomh

Have a look at this thread…

yah epoxy over wood is always the best bet. i use the fgh 2:1 clear. it is a great product… the poly gloss coat is not recomended (tons in the archives about this) even though it says it on the product, if you do decide to go with the poly gloss at least do your fill coat with epoxy… fgh is just introducing a “surfacing agent” for their clear. i don’t think i is on the floor yet but ask them about it, it helps alot with the gloss… the abalone should not be a problem, but of course a test is a good call…

good luck

Thanks much!

Mahalo!!
