Epoxy Gloss/Polish

I just realized that you are talking about the harderner only, not the total volume. So if you are using 2:1 then 1ml per ounce of hardener comes out close to 1%. Sorry to confuse things.

Thanks. I know people want to be accurate and use droppers and such but I’ve always gotten great results eyeballing with the 10ml cap. Try not to over think this stuff … it’s only surfboards.

Ok Greg, now I’m a believer. I was totally dissatisfied with the result of my first epoxy gloss effort. It looked milky and made visible the lengthwise streaks where the epoxy didn’t flow out completely. Because I had this incredible figured wood I wasn’t about to leave it that way. I was considering paying a shop to do a proper (polyester) gloss and polish. In the Los Angeles area I found only one shop willing to touch an epoxy board. They quoted me $100 and, “… if it needs work, we’ll charge extra.” That sounded to me like I was going to get milked. The other shops were so clueless. One told me flat out you cannot do polyester on epoxy. At another they were convinced I had a Surftech! Anyways, I finally decided I would sand it down and start all over…myself.

So I went back to 100 grit and a hard block and then bought every intermediate grit I could find- 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000. No shit. I spent almost all day sanding…all by hand (remember I’m not a garage or backyard builder, I’m the bedroom builder). But I finally got a mirror gloss. Resin Research 2000 with double F and lots of elbow grease.

Thanks to Greg. I would never have made this veneer board if I hadn’t read the WMD thread. I also would have got milked out of $100+ if had had not read this thread.

That’s what I’m talkin’ about!!! Yes, it can be done … gorgeous …

Picture 2 … check out how true the reflection is … Nice!!

If it took you all day a $100 sounds cheap!

No buffer or compound used? Holy crap! That’s awesome! You must be it great shape. I remember doing a hand sand and polish down to 2000 on my first board and it looked nothing like yours. Not to mention it took me a few days to do it as I thought my arms would fall off. “but I was really born to sand” you weren’t kidding where you. Thanks for the posts. Your board is absolutely beautiful.

I did polish with a buffer, at very slow speeds. Being in my house I can’t splatter compound all over the walls. The difference between what I did the first time, with poor results, and this time was adding a few intermediate grits (I think I added 120 and 180 into the mix) and then going past 100o with 1200, 1500 and 2000. The first time I went to 1000 thinking that was more than enough…it wasn’t.

And I’m not in great shape. My back is really sore today.

…hello

to clarify,

there are 2 “systems”: 1 that do not use the 800 grit and the other

you should check the sandpaper to see the letter P

if got that letter (should be) is the “other system”

there s a mistake with the 800 grit

that grit is equal or coarser (depends the brand choosed) than the 600

whoa dude…

WOW LILLIBEL03

it’s a creamer!

respect!

Its quite funny how vpravada has a point on one level, but misses the point on another…

Its an economic I could apply to my own product, but…

Thats right…there’s no one else there to do it, for any amount of money! HA…

It’s a thing of great beauty Jeff…Is that squid inlaid?

Thanks Josh. The squid is an overlay. I had to paint under it otherwise from some angles the shell (oyster) would disappear. I got this micro veneer, backed it with low tack drafting tape. Traced and cut the pieces (with scissors) one by one. Kind of like making a jigsaw puzzle. Next board’s going to be a jelly fish so the disappearing act will be OK.

whoops. posted it up twice by accident.

that is the nicest hand polish I have ever seen

dang its better than my power polish jobs

beutifull board

So nice! I just had yet another failed Epoxy gloss sanding last night. Comes out like a super smooth sanded finish. Still really nice but nothing like what you got going on.

I’ll try your grit schedule on my next one.

What did you use after 2000? Compound and a polish?

Thanks
