Longtime lurker, read through the forums and I think im ready to make my first board after doing ok jobs on repairs. I’m going to do it in my garage, after talking to the neighbours about it they told me they hated the smell of poly, so after investigating about it, decided to try epoxy?
Epoxy is significantly more demanding to use, but if you have an interest in building boards that will last then I think the results are worth it. Your neighbors will never even know you’re glassing if you use epoxy.
Already looked in archives for CET and SURFSET but not much on either? The debate on poly vs epoxy is in there, but as I’ve been told by the neighbours they can’t stand the smell and I don’t want to wreck the friendship over his wife losing the plot over the smell. She had already had a go at me on the poly repairs.
So hoping this will be a good solution. What I’ve been told SURFSET doesn’t need additives? CET needs Xylene for filler coats? Does Xylene smell too much that they will smell it next door?
hey sandthru dion cet works good. Make sure to get the fast hardner though. In my opinion i find the xylene/ wax combo smells quite abit.
In saying that epoxy is not the best for backyard type stuff. Temperature and dust need to be controlled to make things go smooth. In short alot more can go wrong with an epoxy lam than a poly lam. Maybe you could try uv poly ?
