It’s been a couple years since I’ve been around here. Some crappy life stuff kept me from building boards. I recently decided that it had been long enough, and that it was time to start in again. Man, it’s good to be back in the shaping bay.
A couple years ago, I did a couple epoxy resin swirls and and posted in detail what went right, and what could have been better. I dusted off the cobwebs on that knowledge and decided that I’d do it on my first board back. Last night I escaped to the shaping bay, took a blank that I had cut a wakesurfer outline from, and decided I didn’t like the shape. To make it a better wakesurfer, I knew it would have to be shorter. So I decided that this year, my daughter was getting her own board. I suprised her with it after I was done, and she was so stoked that she made me do the bottom lam tonight.
Back to the resin swirl…
This time around, I decided to mix the colors at room temp and not heat the resin at all. I figured if I kept it a bit cooler, the colors wouldn’t mix in the cup. I’m both surprised and stoked at how well it turned out. It’s just two colors. A dark purple we mixed up pre-epoxy mix, and white. A clear board this size (4’6") would typically take about 12 oz. of resin for the bottom lam. I mixed up 36 oz. - 18 oz. of purple and 18 oz. of white. After the mix was done on both, I poured one color at a time into a separate cup - maybe 8-10 oz total in the first blend. I was careful to swirl the second color in at varying amounts and force. I took that cup and swirled it on the board. I repeated this step three more times to get the desired effect.
I was excited to post the pics of the bottom lam now, so if you like it, you’ll have to wait for the rest of the build until later. I just wanted everyone to see that it’s possible to get cool swirls with epoxy.
