just had a quick question…i just bought a new bill johnson epoxy board…and im not to familiar with the all the epoxy info…so does that mean that both the blank and the resin is epoxy or what?
just the outer shell.
the core could be anything, but it is safer to assume the core is “Styrofoam”
REMEMBER that this foam will melt to liquid when brought into contact with
regular surfboard resin and most repair resins.
(you might want to verify this using a search of the archives…)
yea…the resin used to laminate (and hot coat, most likely) is epoxy rather than polyester resin. So don’t fix any dings with polyester resin. You have to buy an epoxy repair kit and follow the instructions carefully. There’s good epoxy repair stuff out there…I like the Suncure stuff for quick fixes, but prefer the normal catalyzed stuff, like Ding-All, for major damage.
The foam is, as my brother said, most likely polystyrene, but might be polyurethane foam. You might want to inquire where you bought it, or if you know the shaper, even better. You’ll want to know that, because polystyrene not only melts on contact with polyester resin, but melts at about 160 degrees, which it can get to inside a hot, closed up car or sitting in the hot summer afternoon sun for a few hours.
