2nd poly board in the think tank at the moment - access is limited to sheets of either 50mm or 70mm EPS.
Fiddled around previously with a 70mm sheet and cut my rocker into it turned out ok - this time around my thoughts are to go with a 50mm sheet - with boxy rails which will leave me with basically a 2 inch rail thickness, but with boxy rails and flat deck the aim is to keep overall volume in the board to increase bouyany on a board of that measurement. To add it will be 5'10 & 22 inches wide with an oversized square tail. Probably run a quad my aim is just to have a step down board from my 9'1 as im back riding my longboards a bit.
Im not going to taper too hard towards nose or rail as im fixed on the idea of keeping as much foam in it as possiable. Once the outline is cut im using only my file and a sanding lock.
Im weighing on he 85kg mark - will this suit.
What thoughts on bending a eps blank for rocker?
Really am only looking at enough rocker to prevent pearling.
hey bee, bending is easy. but only if you got a rocker table and vac gear. you got this gear? if so its a breeze. i've built a few boards out of 50mm its good because you limit your waste and shaping becomes a bit quicker. the dims you say will be prity bouyant so no worries bout that side, but a bit more length with lower rocker will help you paddle in a bit earlier. but its up to you. guess im saying dont skimp on the length to much cos you mite miss it. sory for the txt talk.
my idea was basically to clamp the board to another surfboard (hence give me the desired rocker) and heat it up enough to enable the foam to maintain that shape when it cooled. Im really only looking at lifting the nose to maybee about 4 inches and 2 in the the tail. Im just hoping after it cools it will stay there.
I love flatter boards - im just after speed down the line - this board top to bottom wont be an issue - i have many aboard for that.
My other option is to utilise 2 stringers and bend my blank and glue the stringers in and clamp??? My last board I tried a planing in my rocker and i wasnt happy with the end result - looking at something more uniform.
Alternatively i might just grab a blank a PU blank - but i love the bouyancy EPS brings and epoxy is forgiving for a backyarder like myself.
well first of all you gonna be able to use epoxy what ever you do, so dont worry bout that.
if i were you id get a blank if you can it will save you alot of headaches, if you had the gear id say bend it. see if you can get a moulded eps blank stringerless. or do wat i do and use boardcad and create a board and then get it profiled by an eps manufacturer. this cost about 1/2 the price of a blank for one offs, cheaper if you get more cut tho.
Found a few great threads by some EPS gurus - should be sorted in my approach.
Just concerned that 50mm thickness will be to thin. But hopefully the added volume through bigger rails and not taking much off anywhere will compensate. It will be stringerless but top heavy in the glass department - maybee 3 layers of 6 on top and 2 on bottom.
