Svendsen’s Boat Works (Alameda) sends a truck to Fiberglass Hawaii in Santa CRuz once or twice a week. Go over to Svendsen’s, go into the wholesale desk, ask for Michael, and tell him what you want. He’ll have it brought up on the next truck. No markup, same as you’d pay in SC. They have plenty of EPS blanks… Michael Tosse @ 510-522-7860 They also sell glass cloth pretty cheap
Or call Matt Ambrose (South SF) 650-872-7990, I think he has them too, but I’ve never bought any there.
Sure, if you want billets, there are other choices. Bob’s Foam Factory in Fremont is the cheapest for 1# and routinely stocks 4’x8’ sheets in 1,2,3,4,5 and 6" thicknesses. Bay Foam in Hayward needs advance notice but can make billets any length up to 20’ and densities up to 3#. I’ve bought a 10’x2’x4’ 2# billet there before. But it sounded like Chris wanted an actual blank, and not to deal with the hotwire stuff.
Between the time involved, the waste produced, and the varying results…at this point, I pretty much agree.
I recently got a hot wired blank (2 lb) from Bay. I emailed them drawing and coordinates deck and bottom The price was steep but ball park for a one-off. Quote over phone for $65. When I went to pick it up the front desk lady wanted $95 but when I told her previously quoted price and was obviously ready to walk she let me have it for the $65. Fully hot-wired sure does save labor (and foam dust all over)!
Got the PM, thanks, Chris. But you didn’t mention foam…
I may have a blank for you if you don’t mind cleaning it up a little. I glued up some offcuts and ended up with about a 6’8 egg / double ender with 4 glue lines. You’d have to plane it flat because none of the 4 pieces was exactly the same size But its 3.5" thick, so there’s plenty of foam to fix it… its 2#. Its all yours if you want it. I have another offcut roughly 6’ long by 8" square - with enough cutting & pasting you could splice that into the middle of this other one and probably get anything up to 9’+.
You’d have to put in rocker with a stringer, perimiter stringers, or skins. The deck is flat, the bottom rocker is just the thickness coming out each end.
Just depends on how much time you want to spend, I guess You’re welcome to borrow my hotwire & variac if you want them, I have another blank cut out already and still haven’t finished the one I’m into now. Not to mention another 2 kiteboard blanks ready to go…
