eps/epoxy blank sealing & glassin g

I want to get input from people on the pros and cons of sealing an eps blank vs not sealing? I have read that some people seal their blanks and others do not. Why does it nead to be sealed. Some use spackling, some use epoxy with microballon filler. What sealant bonds better to the eps and the epoxy lamination? What kind do you use and why? If spackle what brand? What sealant will be less prone to delam? What sealant will look better underneath the epoxy? I am going to glass a 7’9" eps blank with blue tinted epoxy resin. What is the best way to get a glossy finish? Thanks in advance for your time and input.

A sealed blank makes a lighter board. Actually a blank that isn’t sealed has a bit better break strength. We make boards that are prone to breakage (thin boards or guns) without sealing. Boards that require cosmetics, airbrush, are always sealed. We use Dap fast and final spackling compound. I’ve never had any problem with this material. I’ve also used microballoons and epoxy and cabosil/epoxy. All have worked great. Delamination is not an issue with EPS no matter what sealing method you use. Best way to get a gloss is to sand the hot coat normally and gloss the board with epoxy with double the regular amount of Additive F.

Hey Greg…its good to have you back on a regular basis…always informative. Are you still pursuing the “New Blank” the PPS?

I’d like to get one when available…I made one and its not easy but then again Im just a Joe Garage builder.
