EPS or XPS blocks source?

Is the reason you think I could go stringerless due to the thickness of the piece?

Regarding glass schedule:
Super light weight is not necessary, durable is.
I anticipate dragging it over rocks and sand and probably standing on it in the water some times.

I’ll have to see how much cork I have. An old Swaylocks friend, TriDrLes gave me a bunch recently. I think I might have enough to do the whole thing in cork.

The finished shape will have a triangular cross section. Think V bottom with a flattish deck.

My thoughts are:

  1. glass the whole thing with 4oz to lock the rocker.
  2. bag the cork on each side. Probably separately to make things easier for me.
  3. glass over. Maybe extra glass on bottom V edge.
  4. hotcoat
  5. maybe do an exposed cork deck

What weight FG cloth are you using over and under the cork sheet.
For an upcoming project, I was thinking maybe 2.5-oz under and 4-oz over for board bottom and 4-oz under/4-oz over for the deck.

For stringerless, I was thinking 4-under/4-over for both deck and bottom.

Do the whole thing with nothing less than 6 oz. Multiple layers. One or two more on the bottom. Two or three layers of eight or ten oz. Would be best. The Hawaiians make an ama out of a single piece of wood. They scour the hillsides and roadways for weeks before they find the right piece. On Maui before the fire they used to have a “Canoe Festival” every year featuring homemade canoes. Ole shaped a Balsa surfboard under the Banyan tree one year. A friend of mine built a “Strip Plank” canoe out of one inch lath under a tree at the Kihei Canoe Club. Set it up with a sail and ama and sailed it up to Lahaina. Took a day or two due to head winds, but he made it. If you get your ama too light, your canoe will not paddle or sail properly. Same thing if it’s too heavy.

For cork over 15kg/m3 (1#) i do 4oz cork 2mm 4oz for bottom of wingboard and longboard surf it’s strong enough. For top on wing board 4oz cork 6oz biax carbon foot pad 4oz glass. Longboard: 4oz cork 9oz biax and for next better 5oz biax + 4oz warp.
On eps 20 and 25kg/m3 (1.25 and 1.5) i go fiber only bottom and sandwi h deck: 4oz cork and 4 to 9oz deck. Simple and cost effective build.

Maybe 20 years ago, I started making a small canoe from Home Depot 2” EPS sheets. I wanted to use it to ride small surf. I took a lot of pictures of the 6 man canoes we have here and made templates. I got the hull to the point of glassing, and I bought Carbon Fiber to glass it, but I wasn’t sure if I made the shape right for a 1 man, so I stopped. Left it outside under a tarp, but the carpenter bees found it and used it for their homes. I was so mad I cut it up and had in the garbage bin, but then I glued it back and filled the holes.
I later saw a nice 1 or 2 man canoe my neighbors worker had and realized the shape I had was off. It needed to be asymmetrical with tail end larger than the front because that’s where most of the weight would be if used as a 1 man to surf with. So back in the trash it went. Right about then SUPs took off and it didn’t make sense to try again.
My dad bought a 2 man outrigger when I was in middle school and we had a blast riding waves for several years. One day my sister and cousin had a bad wipe out that broke one of the iakos and we never fixed it. It was left under the mango tree for decades, until dad traded it for a discount on a hollow tile wall.
The setup of the outrigger (ama) has to be just right, or the canoe will pull to one side.
