I have copy, No. 108 of 1000 I think, Haven’t had a chance to listen to the LP yet but I’m going to get my old man to put it on cd. It was a pressent from my X but I’d say its worth every penny.

Looks like a really nice book, but $200? Come on! Maybe he’ll come out with a standard edition that costs significantly less?

beautiful pictures need to be printed on full gloss high quality paper which dont come cheap.

i think he wants to give you the full quality of his work, not second rate or black and white which is significantly cheaper…

you get what you pay for i guess…

As one of the villains involved in the production of Andrew’s book, I can give some explanation. The concept with the book was to do something that’s basically a collectible piece, like the surfart so popular nowadays, but still affordable, and we figured a really high end book is more functional than something to hang on the wall. The book is limited to 1050 signed & numbered copies and is pretty epic, fancy metallic ink screenprint cover, shipping box, 10" colour vinyl record with the book- none of which is cheap to do in small quantity. I’m pretty stoked with how it came out and at $175 it’s cheaper than a lot of comparable book projects. (we’re trying to be the surfer’s version of Peter Beard basically!) Andrew is really into the shaper/surfer thing for a while too, so that became a thread through the book- guys like the Currens, Lynch, Skip Frye, the Fitzgeralds, the Purchases, Mackie, Simon Anderson, MR- they all feature and there’s interviews with most of them too. Basically it’s not some cynical cash grab- believe me none of us are living the carefree bohemian lifestyle doing this- but an attempt to do something a little left field in the current surf culture. And Woody- glad you got the book- wish I’d known it was you when I was mailing it out!

I have seen a few of Consafos books…all of them are first rate high quality and interesting. My personal favorite…was …F…K You heroes. A pictorial history of some the the most in your face and influential rebels in entertainment and art. Also liked the Dog Town pictorial history.

Thanks for the explanation consafos. I meant no offense, and I definitely understand the high-end art piece idea, and that kind of creativity and quality isn’t cheap. For me personally, a book is something that needs to be more practical than a piece of fine art. I don’t want to have to worry about fingerprints, creased pages, and spills. Is there a possibility of a less expensive version of “Ether” in the future?

Hey Lance,

no offense taken- I know how brutal a $175 price tag is, believe me. Owing to the fact that we’re trying to make it worth getting the fancy book, there won’t be a cheaper version- it’s a limited edition. However I have no doubt there will be another Kidman book of some sort coming out and I’m also working with Joe Curren on a book too.

Kirk Gee is one of the most stoked kindest “villains” you’ll ever run across.

The legends in the book and the images are legendary and Kidman brings them all to the fullest.

The thing itself materially is full of stoke–lightning in a bottle–loot loot loot.

If it ends up worth a penny more in 10 years, you are and have been rich.
