Volcano could trigger tsunami disaster for New York

August 10, 2004 - 1:47PM

A collapsing volcano could trigger a vast tidal wave capable of wiping New York, Washington and Miami off the map, warn geologists.

They also fear southern England could be hit.

Geologists are concerned that an unstable flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canaries is in danger of sliding into the sea.

If shaken loose by a volcanic eruption, the huge slab of rock would send a tsunami more than 150 metres high racing across the Atlantic at the speed of a jumbo jet.

Within three hours, the wave would swamp the east coast of Africa, within five hours it would reach southern England and within 12 it would hit America’s east coast.

New York, Washington, Boston and Miami would be hit by successive waves abound 20 metres high. Tens of millions of people could die.

Although the volcano could erupt any day - it has been dormant since 1971 but tends to erupt every 20 to 200 years - funding to British scientists investigating the threat has been stopped.

Professor Bill McGuire, of the Benfield Hazard Research Centre at University College London, said close monitoring might give two weeks warning of the disaster.

The two or three seismographs left to pick up signs of movement in the rock were not capable of detecting an approaching eruption weeks in advance. “What we need now is an integrated volcanic monitoring set up to give maximum warning of a coming eruption,” said Prof McGuire.

Cumbre Vieja is the most active volcano on the Canaries. Before their funding ended, the British team calculated that it was sliding towards the sea at a rate of one centimetre per year, but that a big eruption could send the entire flank crashing down.

The wave from the landslide would spread out in a crescent, striking the west African coast with a wall of water more than 300ft high in two to three hours.

Its northern side would also brush against Europe. Within three to four hours, a 33ft high wave would smash into the south coast of England, causing immense damage.

After travelling 4,000 miles the wave would be lower and wider by the time it reached America, but still be between 66ft and 164ft high.

!!!OUTSIDE!!!OUTSIDE!!!

wonder if that sucker would wrap all the way around the tip of south america and sweep up here to norcal? if it were four feet high by the time it got here, it would be double the size of most of the s#!t we’ve been getting lately.

Mebbe Roy’s on to something with that 17 footer.

I think I’d be looking at continental shelves and and ocean bottom topography to see where it would break first and stay outside that area. That sucker is going to be travelling at 700mph so there’s no chance of catching it unless you’ve got a Gulfstream as a tow-in machine…

I see dumb people.

Just keeping the dreams alive…he.he.he.

Have you looked at my ativar and what the pig of steel says in it. (see attached)

Hicksy :-))

Heck, I don’t know? just think about all the neat shells and rocks you could collect as the water sucks out. Sounds like a great opportunity to do some shelling?

Roy is selling plans (sound familiar?) at his site for mega-boards.

I’m right on with that thing’s attitude, and a bit jealous, because he can pull off the nose/beer interface. last time i tried that, beer went all over, eyes watered, choking/sneezing fit, sinuses sore for days, and as far as i could remember, not much actually made it where it was supposed to go…

OK, now I know why Dick Brewer is currently in Brazil. My guess is that he’s making a 4" X 12" tow in board for Laird. As for me, I’m going to Orlando to check on buying some beachfront property.

Oh look, there’s a pretty shell?! Why is everybody running ans screaming?

I want to see them run the “Kelly Slater Celebrity Challenge” on this wave. My nominees for Celebrity participants would be Donald Trump and Paris Hilton

Hummmm Hummmmmm Laaaaa La Laaaaa, Hey where did the sun go? (resinhead looks up, just in time to see the green flash of a 200ft lip closing out over his melon. He tries to run but the weight of the shells in his pockets and the metal detector attached to his head slow his sprint…he is doomed.)

This got me thinking about riding mega waves. Why is it necessary to use a surfboard? Since we are now able to avoid the necessity of paddling due to tow in, what about a wave riding capsule like flattened torpedo? This capsule could be built to withstand the pressures of a 100 foot wave breaking on it. Inside, all would be warm and cosy like an aircraft cabin. Suitable control surfaces should be easy to arrange, and the vehicle could be equipped with all kinds of recording equipment and safety features. Such a vehicle could enable any couch potato with dollars to share in the big wave tow in experience. Even wipeouts could be fun.

Howzit Hicksy, I saw that program on the TV and it was pretty scary and also very infomative. Living on an island in the Pacific Tsunamis are always a part of our train of thought. Who knows one day my property in Az. might be beach front. Aloha, Kokua

This is what he was referring to (see attached). The pig of steel also flew a 747 into a wave and tubed it (The Whole Earth Pigalogue c 1976)

if everybody on swaylocks jumps off a chair at 8 pm tonight, then, if my estimates are correct, tomorrow at noon we all get a small tidal wave.

Hicksy, That pig is giving me the feeling I was born on the direct wrong side of the planet, and a few years to late. Where might one get more?

This is where to get the cartoons http://members.ozemail.com.au/~xbum/artwork.htm

Hopefully we can revive some of his wisdom.
