ewa beach late 60's

Paul, I still see the Mongooses every day.  Though I haven't seen you for a while.  Understand you work at the Ewa Service station in Waipahu?  My wife takes her car there for small stuff.  I see the Mongooses in Barbers Point almost everyday when I go surfing in the morning.  I see Herb Pruse there once in a while.  Talk later, Aloha   M Nii

Yeah, it was a trip when they burned the cane. Black ashes all over the cars in the morning if the wind was blowing right. And the huge cane-haulers crossing the road. They couldn’t always stop, so when we saw the sign “Cane Hauler Crossing” with yellow flashing lights, we slowed way down. You get hit by one of those trucks and you’d be history!

Naki was EBR’s most eccentric character in my days (though Kendall’s weren’t far behind). Remember Naki’s Shack? The little shed by the sea wall converted into a blacklight poster and music room (and stuff)? When we lived next to Eaton’s house, behing Kendall’s, Naki would Iron Butterfly late at night and everyone would complain to his Mom the next day. But like you said Cleigh, Naki was spoiled; he got and did pretty much anything he wanted and got away with most of it. Not sure where he is, but I spoke to Steve Kendall recently when I heard his mom passed away (RIP) and he said Naki still lived in Ewa Beach?

Hangman Tree: Someone told us kids back then that you could see the shadow of the guy that hung himself from that tree on full moon nights. We looked a few times, but never did see it.

Are the mongoose gone? Man, there were so many of them before. I think they lived in the keawe tree on th4e mauka side of Ft Weaver Rd. We walked into those woods a few time next to the tsunami center. There were some old foundation back there all taked over by the keawe and hale koa. I don’t think I ever found out what that was?
Laters…

Eh M Nii, Sorry for da time I wen tro da joint in u guy’s yard da time me and David C and me get busted infront your house. We was cruising first day I had my 56 Dodge. But das were dey wen pull us ova. Had no choice but to tro some stuff away.  Hope u wen fine um. I wen spend bout 2 weeks in jail dat time. Wen I got out had spouts 1 inch tall coming up from my drivers side carpet. I was living at Lepo’s house dat time. Tink last time I saw u was Silvas Store was you, Mike P and Lepo on his ped. You still get da same house like back youger days?    Aloha my bradda…Paul

Last time I see Naky was in front Mitsiatsu’s apartments. He was crying in da middle of da road over some chick. I wen stop and talk to him for awhile. Laters Albert Ferrera told me Naky wen cut da legs off all da furniture in his apartment and wen get evicted. Afta dat I heard hes was on da beach in Waianae, den he was homeless townside. Neva see him sence den. He had plenty potential and his family had plenty property. Too bad he wen wase sum all Plenty talent but very bad judgement. I no tink he eva had a job. Too bad fo dis Bradda of ours who could have gone so far. Everybody got to stop da drugs someday. and da soona da betta.

Remeba da trapoline at Geore and Pat Vierra’s house? Da time had wata in da ditch by Ewa bust stop? Mrs Blackadoor at Ewa School?  Da teen club just inside da Barbers Point gate? Da roller rink inside Barbers Point? Riding bicycle acroos da rifle range wen dey was shooting? Dey neva like dat at all. Flagpoles had a flag? Rego at Tonng’s Ranch? Da cattails in da swamp behind Tonng Ranch? Da cray fish in da swamp? Da over pass Honouliuli road by Sid and Jeff Walshe’s house? Da train trcks going from Ewa to Tracks and Nanakuli? Da pheasent by campbell feed lot and by the end of Hawbush Road? Da Magito’s all ova da place? Oh well…Paul…

An den. Biggy and Murry and Hami Castro. Wit da 49 Brown truck? Lata had Lance and Arrow Pavao living der.On da corner by da firehouse. And Clay and Francis (Buggsy) Hawmaeia? By da end of Makuli Road. Later dey wen make one church on da land. I went to school wit Buggsy, St Josephs, we wen scrap one time and he wen take off his shoes and try hit me with them. Was maybe 7 or 8 grade. An even Dennis Sousa, he get you in a choke hold but just no could take a blow. And Naky wen you tink da fight was over sneak up and hit you from behind in da back of da head. Oh well, live an learn.

Cleigh; Thanks for the Hawaiian aloha greetings! It brings a lot of us home in spirit.

Paul and JB; George used to ride quite a bit with Tonyboy and Albert and me, we did a lot of Timberline riding leaving right from Ewa Beach Road and hitting the cane fields behind the bowling alley. I kinda remember a guy named Roy, maybe only rode with him 1 or 2x. Those were good days. Tonyboy had an old Honda 250 street bike that he converted to a dirt bike. We all had, at best, converted enduros, like Yamahas back then. The Huskys came later. Tony's bike was heavy, but he could muscle that bike anywhere! He was one tough guy! I heard from his niece that he's still riding. That's very cool! Aloha, MB

Howzit. Paul. I sent some Bali moto-photos to you e-mail

eh Paul,  is ike tanaka tripping at all the history you dregging up… cracking me up by all the names and incidents you remenber… you are the exceptional one that can recall all this…  must be you neva do so much mind worpping stuff that make the past disappear…   Mrs. Blackadoor,  i would neva think of that name without you bringing her up… i’m not sure if i had her but i had one from your block, Mrs. Hansen… she was supposed to be tough but she was pretty easy on me…  she use to come to my mom’s store… the Vierra’s, Haumea, Castro, are familys  that i have not heard of for a long time… i lived at the enterance of Ewa Beach and neva really ventured  alot to Ewa  Beach Road  as a kid… but that was the sole of the community… Papipi Road only had the Miura and Parez family and kiawe trees the rest of the road until the Hirata hog farm  and the few beach houses at shark country and lastly Park’s egg farm…my closest neighbor besides my cousin Rick Nosaka and family was Ricky Comalang on Makule Road… i would have much rather have live on the road with all you guys…any way good to hear from you…

aloha, ike

Ricky Cumalang and Lester Babacal wne come see me in about 81 or 82. Dey wanted me to join dem raising chickins fo cock fighting. I was too busy. Lester wen pass away shortly afta dat. His father and my father were tight freinds. As  Lester and Ricky and Me. I still see Ricky now and then. Rememba  Lester wen come see me as soon as he came out and ask me to join him and Ricky go raise da chickins. Wen dose guys wen mess around Lester’s girl freind, dey surely wen underestimate Lester. Real bad timing took out one of my dearest freinds. Aloha Oe Lester Boy. …Bradda Paul…

I am so sorry, but I wen spell Lester’s name wrong. Rabacal. Remember Kippy Brian on the corner of Ewa Beach Road. I almost put his eye out wen we were kids wen I wen tro one dat and stuck it in his eye. Da dart wen really stuck in his left eye. I neva wen do it on purpose but he wen go by da dart board and turn around wen was my turn. Lester was 2 houses past Kippy. Maybe Mike Gionson or Jessy and Charley Mizunaka were there. Was long time ago. Hard to rememba. I still see Gene Tsudamaki falling off is bycycle on da road now and den. Last time I saw Mike Victorino was  about 15 years ago. He was police dat time. Ricky Parish wen vanish. Neva see Alan and Judy Unigues for a long time too. And Edmond and Edwin Bolos.

I lived and surfed Ewa Beach in the early 60’s. T

You know plenty of us could have easily made choices or decisions that would have changed our lives drasticaly for good or bad. We cannot do anything about the past but only in the now which will affect your future. There is a “Noeau” Hawaiian Probverb: " I ka wa mamua, I ka wa mahope" " The future is the past".  I always told my keiki and opio, that we need to know where we come from cause that allows us to know who we are and in turn will point us into the future (toward our potential). Maipoina mai oluolu! Please remember “ALOHA” in its purest form; which is “GODS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE”. “Alo” face to face in the presence of God. “Ha” the divine breath of God that He gave to Kanaka (mankind) when HE created Adam and Eve. We all are a part of that original DNA whether we like or not. Choose today who you will serve, for as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. Some will say that I am being religious, aole, no, I am being Kanaka Hawaii. Not my fault some of us wasn’t taught correctly. Without Akua we cannot be Hawaiian. No such thing. No matter what your race we all come from the same stock and DNA. ALOHA like AKUA is for everyone to embrace, share, and be.

Aloha Ke Akua
