ewa beach late 60's

Mahalo for the info Mikie B. Mike Nii, yes we need to plan something for next year. Already made notes to Issac, Mel, Paul, Nate and everyone else on Sways and or from EB. I’m thinking my brother Cal’s generation, our generation and hopefully John Sadowski Nates older brothers Mince and Mouse. Think would be really cool. After all u rite a bunch of us are no longer here.

Cleigh

Cleigh, reunion sounds fantastic.  I'd be happy to help in any way.  I still remember some of the surfers from Pupu St. Too, like Tommy Trible, John Hamilton, Penn Chabrow.  On my street Papipi Rd. was Charlie Bell, The Phillips and couple others.  I see Herb Pruse, Mike Gionson and Charlie Mizunaka once in a while down Sand Tracks.  I helped John Sadowski and Ronald Gionson a couple months ago clean up the mouth of the canal before Ewa Beach Road of opala.  Say hello to Cal for me, I haven't seen him in a while.  Aloha, Mike

I wondered of John Hamilton would ever come up, he was one my surf pals also.

His dad got him a new Hobie, he was showing us the board and said it was just like Corky Carroll’s, just that the nose was narrower and that the tail was different, Corky’s was orange and his was green, the only thing the same was the label !

Mike lets shoot for next summer 2012. That way we can get in the water. I recommend that we start looking for coordinators on each island. Generate a list of people addresses location etc. and begin to email as many as we can on what we plan to do. Once we have the numbers we can then figure location, food drinks etc. Perhaps start planning in January, as not to interfere with families plans during the Holidays.

Aloha,

Cleigh

Jim! I’m not sure who you are but I would like to include you also. Just because we don’t remember or know someone doesn’t mean they should be excluded. Your comments make me realise that you know and surfed with a bunch of my EB friends.(Chris Gardner, Kevin Johns and others).

Cleigh

Aloha Cleigh, I hope us young punks are invited. It would be cool to connect the generations from the earlier gang of the late 50’-60’s and the guys like me who were part of the late 60’s-80’s.

I still run into some of my generation whenever I get out to SC including Cal who’s just a little older. In fact Cal’s boys are the young ones now.

Maybe best to put a simple web site together for this? Somewhere where names can be added, money donated or kokua offered? Just a thought.

By the way, if anyone wants to drop a note to Kevin John's family, the address is:

Dick, Marie and Sharon Johns

1123 Nanihoku Place

Haiku, HI 96708

Harry! between you Cal and Mike B I think you guys got it covered for that generation. Mike B. good idea. I still recommend having coordinators too. We at Kamehmeha are always planning these things and everyone is everywhere, so… coordinators where possible are good. That way we have an actual person to refer to for those who live and reside in that area. This will include families too (keiki, wahine etc) so the generations represented are perpetual.

Mahalo everyone. I am sure more ideas will come forth. What I definiately know is that there doers and followers. We need the doers to show themselves and are willing to make themselves available! nuff said!

Cleigh

P.S. As stated in my earlier post I don’t plan on working with this til after the holidays. Too busy right now. I have a huge project that I am working with and in the very near future all of you will be impacted by it when it happens. I cannot reveal any more because if it doesn’t come to frutrition then all Ive done is waste your time and time is a valuable commodity.

No worries. After holidays best for me too. I'll check with the guy doing my webpage ask about some ideas and bonce it back at a later date.

Good luck with the project!

Next year Summer sounds good Cleigh.  Yes the holidays do get busy.  I got some good ideas that can be passed around.  I will keep in touch.  By the way, I saw the Bacalso family this morning at White Plains Beach(Officers Beach BP)  They were scattering their moms ashes in the surf.  I think you remember them, they were my next door neighbors on Papipi Rd. when we moved there in 1959. Tony, David, John, and Leimomi Bacalso.  David and John have lived on Maui for the longest time.  They were good friends with my brother Randy.  As you may know, Randy died in 2005.  We miss him.  Anyway brother, stay well.  Talk later.  Mike

Remember surfing Tracks. Really big porpuse came in close like right under our feet. They were about 12 or more feet. They brushed up against our feet. The fins were about 2 feet out of the water. Every body started yelling shark. So we yelled that too. Every body went in and we stayed out and surfed. We knew if get porpuse then no more shark. Need to know the difference between shark and porpuse. Every body thought we were crasy, but we were the only ones who knew the difference. So us crazies had all the waves to ourselves. Good day that one. Got to know your surrondings in the water. Trackes was a really nice break. Shark or not…Paul…

If I remember correctly, I never see shark on da north shore, only on da south shore…Paul…

Da Shark normally stay in deep water unless he involved in a scrap wen he too involved to know where he is. He also like warm water like the water around Kahi Point. Most time he wen come inside da outside reef at high tide and got stuck at low tide. He neva mean to be der but he stuck and no can get out. Das when we see him most. Hammerhead stay der all da time but mostly stay by Pearl side or Empty Lot side. But dey no boda notin Only incedent I remeba was wen Alberts father wen get one in his net and da shark wen kick and kick Tony out of his boat. More guys got bit by eel den shark. Even I got stung by stingray but neva got bite by shark. If you wana see shark, go outside reef. Wen da waves build you can see them though the waves and hope they no crash over you as you take off. Kinda like Kahe Point but way father out to sea. And bigger sharks. Had soo much fish outside reef, da shark neva was hungry Thank you Akua…Paul…

Mike I remember the Bacalso’s. Yeah I use to see Randy, Brutus, David & John when I would go to the west side. Sorry to hear about Randy. Certainly lets talk as the time approaches.

Cleigh.

Turned on M.K. to some Like Some Demon one day and we went to outside reef. We had a great day there. No paranoia just good surf. Mike was like at home and later wen we paddled back in he was still stoked for that day. Good vibes with good freinds…Paul…

Sad to hear about Mrs. Bacalso. I grew up with Tony, David and Jon. David and Randy Nii were the same age and they were the first of my generation to leave for Maui. David and I were good friends until he went into the Air Force and left Ewa Beach. I’ve only seen him twice maybe 3 times since then. Brutus and Randy were really close. Randy’s passing must have been hard on Brutus.

We had good times playing little league baseball, surfing and hanging out around the beach. Once we finished high school everyone went their own way, and quite a few of the SC gang ended up on Maui.

Growing up, we mostly saw Hammerheads at SC. Lots of hammerheads and manta rays, there were stingrays too, but I think there were more manta rays. Occasionally there were reef sharks with the pointed nose. Now there’s mostly tiger sharks. Funny that I used to swim out to outside SC and body surf when it wasn’t that good. I’d swim out there by myself and be there without any worries.

E Paul! Outside Reef, Sandbar, Cambells was our secret surf spots when we grew up. Parrishes Reef, Swappyland were also secret spots too! but heck, EL, SC, was never crowed when we grew up so…Good Vibes everywhere. Blessed or what?

Cleigh

Yes we were Blessed Cleigh. Blessed by the fact that we grew up in the time before man changed what our fathers knew. Before the time man changed nature. We surf in the ocean, we do not dig it up. Our footprints are never embedded on the ocean floor. We leave it as we find it, not change it, only enjoy it. We take care of nature, and nature takes care of us. When man dug up the reef, he dug out Gods will and changed the land and the future of our lifestyle. Who are the men who who make trenches in the land and the ocean? Do they live amonst us? When the tide rolls in in the future, will they be living on these shores? Have there fathers ever seen what our fathers have seen? Do they care? Our fathers taught us the way of the land and ocean. Their fathers taught them only of money. To bad they don’t have to live where we do. To bad they did’nt grow up where we did. To bad they did’nt know our fathers. And to bad they don’t know us. Change is a new school, not a hole in the reef. Selfish people seem to live soo far away. When you live next to me you see how I feel and see how I grew. Only then you going understand. Keiki O Ka Aina I Ka Pono…Paul…

E Paul ano ai me kealoha ia oe!

Pololoi ia oe ko’u hoaloha. Meikei no mahalo O Puuloa! Ka home i ka pono o Puuloa! E Hoomeikei ia kakou!

Paul greetings to you! Great thanks to our aina called Puuloa! Rigtheous is our home that is Puuloa! We are all blessed because of it!

Kou Hoaloha ame Kaikuana, Your Friend and Brother,

Cleigh

Eh, anyone rememba da back of da old Primo bottle labels had a row of stars or dots? You get 4  in a row and was a lucky night. We used to peel ff da labels and check. Da old Primo  tasted like it was made with water from Empty Lot. Kida like Li Hing Moi. Still da best beer I have ever had. When Primo shut down, that was my first clue that times were changin…Paul…
