@ Ike I remember that board I think the blank was from my old Shark brand pop out special from Wigwam store in Waipahu. At that time small boards were just catching on and I still had my surfboards Hawaii 9'6" from Alan Matsushima. I used to go to Steve Kears house and watch him shape and glass boards. That was my 1st attempt at making boards. Of course there was no stringer only an inlay in the middle. Like you said not a pretty sight but it still worked.

I emailed Dave Murakami the link to this site and told him about the reunion but I did not hear back from him. The last time I saw him was last year when  Darwin was in town. Tom Mc Chessney used to work with a friend of mine -- State job? and I think he is retired now. I haven't seen him in years but I think he still lives in Ewa Villages. I'll call Dave and ask if he can contact him.

This site is unreal all the stories and old names You, Mike Nii, Tommy Phillips, Mel Behasa, Butch Perreira, Frank Aragon, Mike Gionson, George Kaholokula, Clegh Eaton, Nate Moody, The Kendal's Mike and Steve,Herb Pruse, Doug Sato, Damon Tsurumaki, Bolo's Brothers, the list goes on and on. Whatever happened to Charlie Mizunaka, Errol and Lance Pavo, Steve Kear, John and Johnathan Crouch?

@ Tom sorry for the small little league pix of your brother Mike. Here is a link to  the Pix in real size.

Anyone recognize this house? I don't know if it is the oldest house in Ewa Beach as stated in the caption but it looks so familiar. I'm thinking somewhere in between Parrish Drive and the fire station?

Eh TP! Bino Neves was one of my varsity football coaches @ KS. He coached backs. We did a series of wind sprints after the main part of practice and because I was pretty fast the coaches made me sprint with the backs. Once clocked a 10.5 100yrd. with football cleats, shorts, shouilder pads and helment. It was my soph. year. Always ran sprints in the summer with Stan Sadowski. He ran regularly 10.2-10.3’s at Iolani during track. I didn’t think was fast enough, plus blew out my ACL so I never ran track. Also my soph yr. during PE I tied th schools standing broad jump record at a tad under 9’. 8’11" 3/4. Never even knew what I did too. If I had known maybe I would have jumped harder. Things like this totally changed my attitude about youth sports when I coached soccer , volleyball, canoeing, swmming and martial arts. What no football? Yes I never coached football tho’ I was approached numureous times.

Frank! just seen Nate and his family at COSTCO today. Its a deal, tho’ I now mainly surf LB I still like try shortboarding again. Jus need to get in shape and find someone to shape me a Big Boy short board. Mel so what, maybe both. Nate’s tube riding is still awesome to watch. You know we lived together on Maui for awhile. He is my sons God father. His wife is a believer and Nate recently rededicated his life to Iseu Kristo. Nates wife rips.

Kahu

eh Boz,  that house does look very familiar… i thinik you are rite…plenty coconut trees just like parrish dr…if that is the oldest house, that could will be the spot … the parrish’s were close to the dowsetts and i think the dowsetts where pioneers to Ewa Beach…

far as McChessney, he worte to me and said he and his wife Haru Watanabe’s sister moved to texas to be closer to their dauther and grandkids…that bugga was one rascal… got me in throble numerous times by association…was’nt that i was an angel, but i was very discreet about what i did and never got caught…for example,  i was picking him up from work one evning at foodland waiting in my car and he comes running out of foodland with a bottle of booze under his appron and throws it in my car…well sitting in the car next to me was Alex Sugai’s dad who was neighbors with DR. Hayashi who i worked for cleaning their yard and good friends with my family…Mr.  Sugai was a voulenteer cop and friend of the family so he was complelled to not bust me but to call me and lectured me from running astray…from his point of view the heist was a planned opperation  and i was the wheelman… i was dumbfounded…Tom was not even apporch for the incident…must be he was ond haole kid and no moe hope for him so no need repramand him…i’m sure everybody have their stories of how they were innocent by standers and it was someone elses fault…

no bullshit, ike

p.s.  Kahu, talk about innocent by standers, cannot forget the time GK, you and me got halled in by Chin Ho and Magarrett for suspission…good thing the two of you were such outstanding chariters, instead of booking us they ended up wanting to recurit you and George… too funny after its was over…aloha

Hey Frank! Remember when we would hang out in the small fort / club house you and Roy built under your house? Usually stayed there until your dad drove his old chevy to work so we could go inside and your mom would cook us up something to eat, spam and eggs, than we'd go surfing (but should have been going to school). Yes Frank, I remember well! When I saw Butch last year he said he'd probably be coming to visit some day with you. I hope so! though I live in the mountains area of Bali, not real close to beaches. Are you riding long boards again? I remember the board you had before short boards days, many years before we started hanging out (Roy was more my age). It was a rocket of a long board, black and red I think. I used to love watching you walking all over that board, switching stance, whatever. That's when I lived behind Jimi Ha's store and you used to surf that side of lots then, I think with Imua? So did Herb Pruse and a few others. That's where I started surfing. That was about 67', and we had just moved to Ewa Beach from Waipahu.  I didn't start moving into the Empty Lot line up until I knew enough about surfing to stay out of everyone's way. You learned fast being young haoli boy in those days on Ewa Beach Road you had to be super cool or get chased out of the water. Ha!

All you guys on this site, and I mean everybody, is sooo cool! I"m glad that Butch told me of this site. It’s getting kinda addicting to go here now; I can understand why Sharkcountry’s checking it out everyday.  To be honest with all of you, I really shouldn’t even be alive. You braddah’s are sooo much better men than me. I admire and respect all of you greatly! I thank God in Jesus Christ for every morning I get up. To me, September 15th is a long ways away when you’re my age and shamefully lived the way that I’ve lived sometimes.

Ewabeachroad, I do remember alittle about that so called fort under our house. And just for the record, I could never switch stance. Butch and I still shortboard surf. He’s got more surfboards than me and still rides a 7’10" board out at big Sunset while others are riding 9’ and even 10’ guns. I’m down to two boards right now; a 6’6" for waves up to 6’; and a 7’2" for waves up to 8’; both round pins to surf the Country. Butch is and always has been a way better surfer than me. Always, even to this day, tries to get me to go out to serious Sunset with him, but I got my clock cleaned real good out there one day on that inside bowl and now that I’m older pretty much stick to all the surf spots west of Waimea bay all the way out to Kaena Pt.

One good thing about livin’ in the Country is that there are times when conditions, tides, and swell direction are always changing; and just like growing up in Ewa Beach, you knew where to be and when. It may only be sometimes a 2 hour window of perfection, but that window allows you to be on it before the coconut wireless starts making their phone calls, and everybody and their brother finds out. Butch and I are always calling each other up during the wintertime checking out with the naked eye the surf 'cause even the surfcams can be deceiving. My body has taken it’s toll of poundings in and out of the surf though, not mention I’m getting older; And every year I always consider going to longboards, but my heart and soul won’t let me.

All you braddahs put a big smile on face and a good feeling in my heart. It’s an undeserved honor to be your friend and brother.

to be continued…

Howzit everybody, first  i’d  like to tell wilton  no  worry  about  the  pic  with  mike. he  watches  this  site  too. but  he  no  like  say  nothing. i  think  that’s  some  kool  pics. looking  @  it, i  see  mike  chico, you, Teddy ko  Shingo  Jo’s son  4-get  1st  name. Bruce Langill, Jon Dudley, Adrian Tadley, that  cannot be  Gene Okamura  or  is  it ? now  i  4-get  who  i  saw,  no  more  the  pic. anyway  if  one  guy  from  kona  bring  my  book  back  U  guys  going  trip  on  who  U  see .  How  do  U  post  those  pics  online  we  get  plenty  old  kine.  also  Kahu ,  Bino  was  a  steady  fixture  over  here. my  mom &  tutu  loved  him.  Bradda  Bino  was  a  All American  out  of  Purdue  University  football  program. he  was  short, but  boy  could  that  man  run.  Bradda Bino  died  from  pancreatic  cancer. There  went  another  good  brother.  Aloha T.P.

sorry  after   going  by  somebodys  word   i   checked   &  Bino  was  not  all  american  but  he  was  a  allstar  running  back  out  of  Purdue  U.  i  can  verify  myself.  i’ve  been  to  his  house  b-4  saw  all  the  trophies  up  the  ying-yang. anyway  he  was  1  of  my  Hero’s   Aloha  T.P.

Yes, I think he was all confrence at Purdue U.He was fast Once he raced against Randy Hoopii (All-Star running back KS) and won. And heck he already was sporting some lbs.Randy was in the same speed catergory as Stan Sadowski. At KS we knew his past accomplishment on and off the field. Great guy, great coach. Certianly was a loss as he died fairly young.

Ike! How can I ever forget that one. Gees!Guestioning at the HPD. “BOOK’em DANO”! Did some fast talking cause we certainly fit da descriptions. GODs Grace! We were planning to go back and you know what.

Tommy! Speaking about your buddies Jerry Hunter, Ike, GK and myself had a major run in with him. Really pissed me off then!! Tell him when and if you see him and Billy Akiona, is all good. I forgave him. Back in da day him and James Jim wen get cracks from me. Nothing with Billy really, jus he was there once wen I caught up with Jerry at Yoks. Dis is one story I not going share on dis place. Maybe in person wen we meet @ Reunion but only if somebody brings it up. To Mikey V. and that generation, Crouches etc. I am truly sorry for my behaviour with all of you back then. jus that incident sorta wen blow my mind dat somebody would do that to us. The injustice was wrong, but also the method I used was wrong. BACK IN DA DAY I was very protective of my friends and our home town. I hope is that we can forgive the past mistakes and go forward. I don’t “inu” no more,at least not like da good ole daze. Hopefully everyone has matured, and da drinking will be civil. Frank Aragon, concerning Mike V. and that gang the comments above include you too. Sorry if ever I intimidated you or treated you wrongly. To all da babose’s who still neva learn get with it brothers.

Eh Boys,

I showed my wife that picture of the old house in Ewa Beach, she grew up on Parish Dr. and said thats not  there. It kind looks like a place down EB Road by Jimmy Ha Store, but don’t recognize the fence and new stone wall. Maybe looks like down before Shark Country, you know accross from the Kears, Crouches… maybe on the beach by the Sugai’s down that area. The beach was smaller down there and more rocky sand. Someone help Tommy to put up his pictures. All the pics are amazing and more fro everyone would be great. Not smart enough to have kept anything from back then… Mel B. one smart bugga to have kept some of that stuff, and Mike Bell too. Maybe at the reunion everyone can bring what they got from back then and we can all enjoy. John S. still get one old long board from before that he still rips on, maybe he will bring that one. Any one else got things from then, make sure that you bring them, shorts, boards, what ever. My son in-law get one old Wardy Hawaii that I should bring for old times…kinda like on Classic Car Show, but for surfing.

Had great times with Lance and Errol. Who lives in that house now. I remember his did was really into marcial arts. We used to wait till his parents went off and then try start that black old car that was in the garage so we could go surf. No surf racks so we would hold the board out the window to Shark Country or beyond. What about using candles when didn’t have parafin wax, or rubbing boards together. How about how we used to walk with the long boards with two guys carrying, on in front and one behind. Walk or paddle all the way to Shark Country from EB road. No wheels, gotta walk em. No leashes, when you fall off gotta swim. Some one falls off gotta get out of the way. I remember one time at Empty Lots, Norman Nauka says to me, “Eh Butch, don’t get in my way, I don’t feel like cutting back today.”

Before you got out of the way or they would run you over. At Empty Lots if you didn’t live there some guys would take their boards when the fell off and hide them under  the house. I think that I saw Frankie Maria do that to some guy from Waipahu or Pearl City. That was when Empty Lot had the empty lot. Also, Cleigh, I think either your house or nearby, had that shack that we built over the water it seemed like at high tide. Also by the Enemoto’s and also next to my dad’s house had one like that. Build up on stilts and old beach house. Tony Ferreira,  the old man, not the son, was my grandfathers drinking and fishing buddy( in that order). He had that boat and he caught that giant hammerhead out by the outside reef, that picture came in the paper. Also when we were kids we lived more down by Empty Lot, almost across from the Sadowski’s, my sister and her husband live there now. When we would go by Jimmy Ha store we would walk on the opposite side, we heard that he used to kidnap kids. He used to sit outside every day. If you went inside, there was hardly anything in there. What about the mosquito truck, the milk truck and also the soda truck, all coming down Ewa Beach Road.

ButchP

No problem GUTRS.  This reunion was long overdue.  Like I mentioned before, days are moving by to quick.  BTW, the correct name is Puletasi Mageo.  He was my classmate and I believe he died quite a few years ago.  I hope I'm bot mistaken.  He actually played on Campbells football team with me.  As far as the ulu is concerned, I don't get very many opportunities to eat it so anything you bring will be a plus.  Have a blessed day, talk later.  Nii

Mike-  i  don’t  know  4-sure  but  i  don’t  think  james " pule-tasi "  mageo  died . couple  yrs  ago   i  stopped  off  @  7-11  in  Kapolei . as  i  was  paying  4  my  items.  the  cashier  told  me  Howzit  Tom  &  started  laughing  &  U  know  Pule  with  that  smile  just  started  asking  me  all  kind  s  questions  about  everybody . Pule  was  the  koolest  sole  i  ever  met.  B-4  days  don’t  ever  smoke  paka  with  him . U  pass  to  him.  no  come  back .  Hopefully   the  Bradda  still  alive.  also  cleigh  jerry   was  makakilo  boy,  didn’t  hang  with  him. to  much  ai ’ hu’e  that’s  Y  i  said  previous  comment  must’ve  had  all  kind  trees  his  house,  because  he  could  get  anykine.   aloha  T.P.

Butch-  just  by  U  mentioning  all  those  G.O.Daze  my  mom’s  bro. Richard  wen  he  lived  with  us  used  to  buy  the  real  dried  abalone  from  ike’s  family  store  he  had  1  pocket  knife  and  slice  pieces  real  thin  U  can  see  right  thru.  Aloha  again  T.P.

Butch! Funny thing I thought was by Jimmie Ha’s store too! Wow mosquito truck, no leashes gotta body surf in, no hassle da older guys, dey going push your board in da whitewater den you gotta swim in. Always rescue your friends board when dey lose um wit da foot drag. We called it da wharf! High tide Norman made some awesome shallow water dives from there. Da beg permanant raft in front da lot. Jus past EL, maybe two house down, would have one left that I would surf all da way to Les E’s house by Jimmie Ha’s place. Walking two man carry boards to SC or jus paddle um. Several times Doug Kinsley, Norman Nauka, myself paddled all the way to O beach surfing along da way. Remember when I discovered Yoks. Dang I was hooked. No one out back then. Surf all day only you and your friends. Hollow…  I like say was my first stand up tube bu wasn’t. SC When used to A Frame. Would get cover ups. Still can feel the lip brushing my hair coming out wit Alan Kang (Nelsons older brother) watching. Nose take offs, skeg reverse take offs, spinners on da nose, losing your board in ffront of da walls hoping somebody get um before it hit the wall and ding your board.Watching Johnny S. hanging 10 all the way to shore and whipping out maybe 3 ft from shore.

Cleigh

Just think of all those kids who would run after the Mosquito truck, or ride bikes behind it not knowing that the truck was spraying out DDT. I am asthmatic, so we’d close the windows up tight, plus my Dad knew that they were spraying DDT.

I wonder if that’s why so many EB kids grew up a little crazy or wild. Tommy you used to chase that truck?

One time we went down to the artesean ponds in the sugar cane fields behind Leeward Estates (where Ewa Estates is now) to swim. When we came back up the guys were using those big sprayers to irrigate the fields. Those things would suck up water from the dirt flumes. They pointed that thing at us and sprayed us with that pilau water. Whoa that was nasty. Smelled like the water was sitting in the flume for days.

And we when take off their clothes to swim so our parents wouldn’t know we went down there. We were all soaked in dirty water and smelled like that… one word, busted.
