Yesterday while at work at Raging Isle in Haleiwa, in walks “Gooney” and his wife to say Hi; how cool was that! They saw Butch earlier that morning who told them where I was working. Just alittle prelude to this Saturday’s reunion.

Tim, Aloha this is brudda Rex, from the big island.I live in N.Kohala on the north side.Your family looks great.Do you still call Frankie Maitland,he lives in Ewa now.I’m going to make the reuion at "O"Beach this weekend.Hope you might be there also?
E Ewa Beach so fa from da main stream why evry body like move out hea? We was only 1 small bunch family living at da end of nowhere. Now everyone wen find paradice. Ho bradda. Now dey like change da paradice da wen see to da place dey came from… Y dey just wen stay home. If der home not good enuff den no come my place an try change um. U only going make my place like yours was an u neva like dat , das why u wen move. Come my house, enjoy, but no make me change into you. U go somebody home, you enjoy da hospitality, you no change da family to your ways. Yu like der ways, jion in, if you like your own ways, go back home. Do not create what u are running away from. U like come enjoy what we grew up wit, den come, enjoy, but you like come and change me to your lifestyle, den go back afta da visit. I like to see you, but I no like change my life on acount of you. I am who I am, I am where I came from, I am Ewa Beach. I no like move to your town, or create traffic or new rules in your cummunity, I no like bada you at all. Please no bada me. Dis is all I got and its home to me. Respect my Aloha, and I will respect yours. Or someday you goin realize, u wen destroy da goals yu was looking for. When your children ask you why, tell them about Aloha, and mean it. Nowdays the only thing I see is an infiltration of city people looking to escape the city. Then they build a city just like the one they are trying to escape from. Remember it’s not the place, it’s the people… To all those that I have grow up with…Aloha My Braddas…Paul Shepard…
Better words never spoken, Ewa just isn’t the same without the suagr mill, endless stores and malls, like they say, there’s no stopping progress, but does progress have to be a steam roller and crush everything that was.
On another note, I’m off to the airport today, get into honolulu at 2:30, time for a surf with my friends Yasu and Keiko, tomorrow I’ll venture out of Ewa and “White Plains” for a recon mission.
Aloha and looking forward to seeing the “60’s gang” this Saturday

Howzit Rex,
Long Time No Hear. Last time I saw you was at Kawaihae Harbor, 20 plus years ago...... I had no gray hair then.........
I haven't spoken the Frankie for a few years. I gave him some advice on setting up his fishing boat and heard he was doing good.
He was diving for Seaward Marine at Pearl Harbor for awhile.
My kids and I go diving when the water is nice. Fishing when it's not.
Work is getting in the way of everything else.
Aloha,
Tim
E Paul! E ano ai me kealoha! Greetings! E Aloha Kou Hoaloha! Aloha to you my friend! What you said is one of the reasons why I left to Maui. It helped that my ohana are from Maui and Lana’i. Wanted to start all over again and raise my keiki like how we grew up. Got involved in preserving this Island as best as could. Not pau yet. Things in the works that will change all Hawaii for the best. I wil keep you informed.
Aloha ame ke Akua Pu!
Your hanabada friend,
Cleigh
Paul & Kahu, U fella is correct. The action that went on over here just devestated this town . I squawked 2 Haseko a few times about the shit that went on, with no results. U have to have large kupe’e to fight these big corporations. That’s why my brother Rick stays in punalu’u- Hau’ula area. He rarely leaves. To me that’s the only country area on this rock. Aloha T.P.
Howzit Cleigh, Howzit Tom. I stay hea my whole life. Nobody goin change dat. I no mo utta place to go. My hart is dis place Ewa Beach Road. Even if I go I still gotta return. Cause dis is da only home I ewa had. Dey goin make it hard on us, but we not goin give in. It;s not the dog in da fight, it’ da fight in da dog. Dis dog getting old but das ok, heart still young. Maybe no can change da future, but no can change da past. Best I can hope for is dat our generations are strong enough to carry on. Make them strong so that we all will surviive. This is what we got from our parents and grandparents and what was expected from us to carry on. Let it be, Let it be. You may destroy the land, but you will never destroy the hearts of the people living there. Let it be, Please Let it be…Bradda…Paul
Pauley-Boy, - I catch your drift, that’s Y i’m still here too . We would be nuts to sell this crib. Where we going find now days 1 place with no morgage .Any place U go now days around here going be minimum 4-500,000 plus. IF no was for our ohana we’d be paying thru our ears. Anyway, like u say. I no going no place . Aloha T.P.
Paul & TP! Mahalo for the input. You know I would bring my keiki to Mom’s place to spend summers there jus so they could feel what it was like to live there. They’re older now and all coming to this reunion. They understand their culture, their place and who they are. They know that Puuloa is a connecting point for them and its history is rich. I’ll be there tomorrow. Hopeing to get together with whomever Friday afternoon or night. Staying at Tony Ferreira’s place. Call me, cause I no moa u guys Ph#. Here is mine: 269-9823. Certainly will call Rick when I get in. Suppose to meet Mel in town tomorrow too. Wife like do some wahine stuff when we get in. Go Kapolei ladas do food shopping at Costco & Target. E Paul u rememba when you was going to Damien. U me,. da Kendalls all catch ride wid u cause only u was old enough to get license. Tink I was 8th grade. Kendalls and I think Naky was going Maryknoll. Fun daze. Looking to more of the same again this weekend.

I really enjoy reading this exchange. Wish I knew how to save the whole thing and put it in to book form. I learned how to surf at officers beach.
Howzit- just going back to read some things people had to say about., 1st i’d just like to respond about the popolo guy U folks talking about. I don’t think the word popolo is discriminating. We used to call the guy who i think you’re discribing popolo. His name was Leslie Robinson, he lived in the loop where Tim & Danny McClafferty lived. Bradda Leslie was the only popolo, Oh wait, there was Scoopy Breenan who lived next to the Leahy family. Both of these cats were very humble & could hold there own surfing. I really don’t know if any of these guys glassed boards. Both these braddas were Kool.
I think we should give a shout out to James Devlin for starting this crazy thread. In 3 days a bunch of wild and crazy bruddas from the end of the road will be seeing each other for the first time in a long time. For some like me, it would be the first time to get to know you.
Looking forward to getting some interesting interviews and lots of shots of smiling faces, hugs, tears, laughs, music and Aloha.
Talked to Scott Kauihou just now and he’s going to try and stop by after work. Called Vicky Gaynor to try and get a hold of Joey. Called Mr. Husic a couple of weeks ago and invited the Husics as well. Emailed Barry Morrison.
Sorry fellas, but Mary Oxley will be out of town this weekend. I’m not sure if Jimmy is coming, he missed the family gathering 2 weekends ago.
My brother may not make it either, his appendix ruptured last month, and he still has an open cut on his stomach. I hope he can at least come over for a little while to say hi.
Just want this back for us all to see.
haha! u buggas is soooooooooo vala au! ewa beach must be all portagees! lol! i been subscribed and silently reading along with u folks, this thread keeps my phone chirping with notifications. great thread an great bunch of guys!
Eh Makakilo, when my father bought his house in Ewa Beach, there were only about 2000 people living there. Before they built the area where my dad’s house is there were probably only 1500 people. The area was so undeveloped in the 50’s, there wasn’t a school. Kids had to go to Waipahu or Ewa for school. Ewa Beach Elementary was built in 1959, Pohakea Elem and James Campbell High in 1962, not sure about Ilima, but I think it was part of the Campbell complex.
When we were growing up this place was isolated and everyone knew everyone else. A lot of the guys posting left Ewa Beach in the 70’s or even earlier, but their familes stayed.
I can only imagine what it was like when my grandparents built the beach houses in 1940 or so. Dad said the road was just a coral road like the old cane field roads. When I was a kid there was no stop light at Ft Weaver and Geiger or at Ft Weaver and Renton. Just had the blinking yellow if you were on Ft Weaver and the blinking red on the side roads.
I hope you come down and be a part of this gathering.
Eh Sharkcountry! Are you going to film this reunion in a way so that we can DVD copies for ourselves? I hope so.
I entered this site on page 87; but I’ve read every page of this site from page 1 until now, and it’s taken on a life of it’s own.
King Solomon once said: “as in water face reflects face, so the heart of man, man”. I know on Saturday, when I see all of you again, that in your eyes, in your faces, in your hearts, even without you saying one word, your pride and love of Ewa Beach, of days gone by, of memories of people already gone before us,all of the waves and adventures of several generations will be brought together in one celebration.
Like I first said; our surfers were just as good as anybody else’s anywhere. The Ewa Beach Surf Club was a true “country” club; “soul” surfing at it’s best.
to be continued…
brukah, surfed pop’s today, waist to a foot overhead on the sets, drove out to barber’s to make sure I could find it, it was a trial, when I saw Geiger road, I knew there was something [familar about where I was.
