ewa beach late 60's

I was just a Haole kid living on Hickam Air force base. it was a paradise. I met Jim phillips there when we were in High school at Radford. We were building boards in the base wood shop at 15 years old.

We were not old enough to drive so our parents would take us to Officers Beach and drop us off for all day surf sesssions. There was always surf and it’s where I caught my first wave. I really wish I could be there, so Jim Phillips will have to be my eyes and ears for the event. The 1960’s were magic time for me.

I have included a pic of me and some friends from Hickam air base getting loaded up for a trip to Barbers point. I am in the middle. Also included a pic of me from a few weeks ago with a board I built for charity (Surfers for Autism)

                                                                                                                                                      Thanks for the memories

                                                                                                                                                       Roger

Tonight was a beatiful night. Once again I was in the presence of my Ohana of long ago. Cleigh Eaton and Cal and der familys, and Chico Koalapai, And Nate Moody, and Mel Behasa, and Mike Nii, and Mike Phillips, and Mike Bell, and Suzzy Volgogesang, and Mikie Volgogesang. No words could descibe the presance of the love shared, nor the rememberance of the hearts bonded there. The memories of each one took me to a place I have longed to be. Been long past but not forgotten. The best thing and the one thing in common was the love of our heritage, Ewa Beach. Though things have chaged here, the Ohana that grew up here are still the same. Feels so good to to know the family is still  present here. Feels like the heart just got young again.Talk story brings out what we remember and forget. Talk story brings us back to our youth.  Talk story heals us. Talk story binds us together. Talk story gives our  future generations root to what makes them so special. The answer is Ewa Beach. So what really is the Garden of Eden. Look at our past and our Ohana. Do you see what I see…Paul…

THE REUNION WAS TOTALLY WONDERFUL. MANY OLD SURFERS MADE THEIR WAY TO OFFICER'S BEACH AT

BARBER'S POINT, AND GOT TO SEE THE ORIGINAL EWA BEACH SURF CLUB MEMBERS. IT WAS A GREAT DAY.

I WAS PROUD AND HAPPY IN MY HEART TO HAVE EXPERIENCED SUCH A BEAUTIFUL EVENT.  Naky

Naky, onamission aka Frank Aragon here; you are sooo right my EWA BEACH BROTHER, like you, I also was sooo humbled in my heart and soul to see da old Ewa Beach in da people today; an “Ewa Beach Experience” to da max! I can’t even put it into words right now how I feel, and will feel for the rest of my life.

I know this sounds crazy, but I’m going to say it anyway, when can we do something like this again?

to be continued…

this had to be an emotional roller coaster of my life times, 48 years since last surfing Barber’s, immediately have another surfer of the early sixties say ,hey I know your, Jim ?

The air was thick with alohas, Kahu Cleigh’s invocation and Hawaiian melodic chants, Butch’s prayer following.

Myheart broke during the paddle out as we spread the lei flowers across the waters for the ones we lost over the years.

I felt so proud and blessed when Kahu ask to me to say a few words on Ewa and it’s connection on my life, Ewa, Ewa was where I rode my first waves, got my first tube, first nose rides, decent turns, built my very first board with my now deceased father.

Ewa is my tap root.

Thank all of you who I got to at last meet, the greatest cast of characters

Thank you Kahu for entering my heart

Jim Phillips

Can’t tell all of you how much I have enjoyed following the discussioin.  I graduated from Campell in 66 and have never been back, but I know so many of the people you speak of…Rick Johns, Kevin Johns, Guy Kamaka, Lester Enomoto, plus so many names I have forgotten over the year.  I do know I had  classes with Naky, Nelson Kang, Paulette and Pauline, Jesse Mizunaki.  I’m glad you all got together and had so much fun this weekend, your talks are such fun memories of times gone by and so many names, some of which you have probably forgot, like Pam Gooden who passed away earlier this year…Sue and Joe Paskoski (no idea what ever happened to them), Caren somebody, and many others from Iroquois Point whose names escape me right now.  Every so often I run into people from Campbell, ( real estate person Daryl Keliinoi, a co worker at Qualcomm Inc, and a hospitality clerk in Vegas that gave me a room with a great view just because I said I graduated from Campbell (probably 40 years before her).  I’m just a stupid haole that still has island fever and loved every minute I lived there.  We did spend most of our time at “O” beach, so happy it is now open to the public.

Hey Cleigh, your dad must have known my grandfather, he was with the Army Corps of Engineers back in the 40’s. He was the head draftsman and was a project manager on many of the projects built including the harbors and the gun shelters you see all over. The ones that they built for the giant guns from the battleships that were destroyed on Dec 7th, 1941. I know he also worked on some of the underground facilities, but I don’t know which ones. Sometime after the war he left the Corps and went to work at Pearl Harbor. He was KS '09.

I’ll be working on the video’s and probably make one for the program and one with all the interviews for the facebook page. All of it will be included in a single DVD that everyone will get somehow. Someone has the check-in list so Suzzie V will help me figure that part out.

Aloha, Harry

Howzit Paul. I haven't talked to Jim Greene yet, but will try and hook-up soon. He's living down south from me, about 1 hour+ away. We'll try and get him up to meet my family. Super long time since I've seen him! But good to know there's another Ewa Beach local living in town now. Was really great hanging with you Paul. We had some good times together! Hana Ho! Mike

Mahalo to all the good people that made the reunion one to remember for years to come. The food, vibes and the solid friends that came together was cool, My son Ian was there and it blew his mind just to feel the good vibes , its because of our love of the ocean that brings all of us back too. Hope to see all of you again one day soon, Peace.

what a wonderful  and joyous weekend of aloha and fun…for some starting from thrusday and still going on tonite as i am sitting here at home… mahalo, mahalo, mahalo to everyone who shared in this happening for it could not have been an event without the participation of EVERYONE  that attended… and mahalo to everyone that wanted to be there but could not make it, we know your thoughts were with us tho as Bruce Brown would have said, “you really missed it”

extra mahalo goes to:Ke Akua for giving us a beautiful day with blessings,  Kahu Cleigh for his guaidance and encouragement,  Mike Nii for being in charge of  ‘ground control’ and organization (goood job)… Mike Bell for donating all  the reunion shirts and for  traveling  the longest distance away to make this event (Bali)… and Bradda Mel and Beverly Behasa for ; art work design for the reunion shirts, making wood plaques for honoring our special surfers, EBSC stickers, and EBCH tee shirts, and overall help in organizing and checking that all  bases were covered…, Harry Alama for pictures and video of this celebration…, Frank and Roy  Aragon Brothers for skin protection products…, and Suzie Vogelgesang Sunder for providing food warmer eating utensils and miscellaneous  accommodations for a party on short notice…

I think Mel and Beverly Behasa should get a big shout out for all the work they did. Mel made plaques for the original EBSC crew, setup the table and banner, then kept the music going. Beverly worked her butt off starting with gettting all the tables covered with beautiful table cloths, then she sat at the check in table with Bertie (Ike’s wahine), then she helped Susie setup all the food.

There were a few other ladies I didn’t get names of, but they worked so hard making sure we had all that food setup while us bruddas were hugging, laughing, crying, reminiscing about the days gone by.

Mike Bell, it was great to put a face to the name and finally see you. Problem is we no look the same with the new hair styles, so kinda hard to remember back 35 plus years. Those old photos helped a lot. Your generosity was incredible. We all have a shirt to remind us of that day and where we came from.

Cleigh and Mike Nii mahalo for planning this and Mike especially for making it happen. Cleigh I want to find some time to sit down with your mom and do a long interview. I’d like to get some of her stories about the days when Pu’uloa was at the end of the road. Days when Nana Veary lived there. I think she has some mana’o we need to get recorded. I can work with Cal to do this.

As I said before It was an honor for this Kamehameha boy from the other side of Ewa Beach to meet the empty lots gang, the Ewa Beach Surf Club that I had only heard about. It was so good to see my closest surfer classmates from Ewa Beach Elem, Scott Kauihou, Joey Gaynor, and David Arioli. Another wonderful surprise was seeing Robin Park. I was named after her uncle Harry Park. I haven’t seen her since the mid 80’s. The Park family was calabash cousins, so it was so nice to see her again.

Could go on 4-Ewa but gotta stop for now.

Aloha my friends and new friends, Harry Alama, AKA sharkcountry

sharkcountry… i just sent you a “PM” about that picture you posted and about a site to share stories and photos. I’m the guy in the back row with the orange longboard and black tshirt.

Aloha everyone, I created a facebook page and will be adding video clips and photos. I don’t know what you need to do to be in the group, but I think at a minimum you need to have a facebook account. I hope you can see this without having an account.

Here’s the link.

Hey Everyone,

Wnat to thank you for working so hard to put last Saturday’s event on. It was especially great to have my wife there to meet you. She’s been hearingmy sories of growing up in Ewa Beach for years and now she has a real sense of the people. As much as Ewa has changed since I was a kid – and even more for some of you! – my core memories, and what sets Ewa Beach apart, are the people.

Thank you MIke Nii for spearheading this get-together, you busted ass. Bell, the t shirt is going to be a treasured memento. The food was killer, music amazing. All the stories were the best! Only wish we could have stayed longer. Next time!
