I ran into Marshall Crum at Diamond Head today. Wouldn’t have known it was him except that another friend of mine knows him pretty well. Marshall would have been part of the group graduating high school about 1974, but he moved away from Ewa Beach in 1969. His little sister was my elem school classmate up until they moved.
We chatted for a while and caught up on some stuff. He’s making some really cool boards right now. Short egg shapes with complex bottoms. He would have loved to be at the reunion, but he didn’t know about it.
I bet Ewa Beach side had nice waves today, no wind this morning. Diamond Head had some nice ones with 6-8 foot faces. Hope you guys all get a couple waves this weekend.
Naky, got one firend with a Woodie for sale here in Ca., not too expensive.
Barry Morrison says you were the spitting image of Bob Dylan, then became John Lennon, Naky the chameleon
Baddah Mel is here, we went to the international Board Room show at Del Mar race track today, Monday he’s coming up to my shaping room for some EPS and epoxy training.
Windansea club contest in LaJolla today, I’m in the finals tomorrow.
the reunion put my head back on straight, I no longer hate everyone in California, but I so want to be back in the land of Aloha soon
Naky, Jim Blears passed away in the last year or so. He was living on Kauai. That spot is Puaena.
My relatives, the Kahalewai family lived on the point many years ago. They were originally from Kaua, and related to the Cordes family. Sonny Cordes owned the SC shack that so many of you guys had a lot of fun in during the early 60’s. Sonny Cordes sister, Aunty Girlie (Wilhemina Cordes Heu) lived in the shack from about 1967-68 til mid 1974 when she passed away. She was my hanai grandmother since we lived so close and spent so much time with her. My real grandmother, who was her older sister, lived on the mainland. She told me her grandmother’s name was Mary Ann Kahalewai and was from Kauai. Auntie Girlie treated us the same as all her grandchildren and always told us so. I loved her dearly, and miss her so much.
She spent most of her adult working life as a teacher on Molokai. The years she lived at the SC house were the years I started to understand the ocean and all of the wonderful things it gives us. Her influence on me and my brother was just as strong as the waves we were riding just off shore. During the summer, my mom wold drop us off at the beach house and we’d spend all day with her. We’d surf, or play on the beach. Help Auntie Girlie do stuff with all the animals they had down there. Mostly she would talk to us and tell us who we were. Sometimes her real grandkids would spend the day down there swimming with her and we’d all have a great time. Many lived on Molokai or Maui and went to Kamehameha, so they’d come down to Ewa and sometimes they’d stay with us over the weekend then go back Sunday.
She once helped Eugene the Caveman after he had a terrible surfing accident. He remembers that day well. She would have done the same for anyone.
Life in Ewa Beach in the late 60’s was great. Life along the beach was unreal.

Grewuponlots, not sure who this is? JB? I was out the day that dead body came floating by, just outside of the break area. Danny and I started paddling out to see what ir was; only could see the bloated stomach at 1st and wasn't sure what it was, then we saw is was a body. The guy had a dive mask on. We paddled in and I think Rob McDonald's mom called the police or fire department. We watched them paddled out on a long red rescue board and eventually got the body to shore. Later we found out the guy was a tourist, and went out at Ewa Beach Park for a dive. His wife was waiting for him to come back. Was a bit freaky.
Hey grewuponlots, Maybe you Doug Kingsley. Eda you one Pantastico or Doug if you was beach side. If you was road side, you gotta be one Kaimi or Goya. If you mo empty lot side, you gatta be Gandal or Ahsing. But I tink by da time had Ahsing, Lam dem was gone. I no can rememba now who wen move into Kingsley’s afta he wen move out. Alohas my bradda…Paul Shepard…
No can be Doug Kingsley, Kingsley ws gone before had houses on Empty Lot. If Rob McDanold was der, was long afta Kingsley. Doug Kingsleys time had telephone pole floating in da wata and tar sticking to your board and body. Had to use gasoline to get it off. And if I rememba, Naki’s surf shack or whatevas was not der da time Kingsley was. Dat shack was maybe 6 by 8 by da pier side by Pantastico’s warf. We stone out in der or we sit on da roof and check out da surf. Das wer I found my Bolo knife wen Mark Gardener wen steal um and hide um on da roof. I took back my knife and trow all his stuff away. He was lucky dat time I wen len um go. He neva cross me again. Bless you Bradda Mark, where Ewa you stay, Alohas from your Bradda Paul…
So grewuponlots! Can you identify yourself? Paul pretty much narrowed it down. Pantisticos were related to Kuialapai, Buddys father Mrs. Pantistico’s is his mom. Second marriage. Nauka related to them too. Rocky lived with me for awhile on Maui. Also did his funeral at Ho’okipa. Was last time I saw Buddy. Kani Kaimi ohana moved to Makakilo in mid 60’s. Kani,Ricky and I car pulled to Kam. Kualapi family moved to town around 69-70 cause parents separated. Remember being told this when I came home from college during the summer. Remember thinking the winds of change was coming to Puuloa (EB). Really did not know the MacDonalds as they came after. Wasn’t there when i was growing up. EL was one EMPTY LOT back then. Anyway, glad to hear from you, jus like know who you are?If by chance you are Dougee Kinsley, please contact me. I know Doug live on Molokai, as both Nate and some other friends confirmed this.
Cleigh-- That unidentified person couldn’t B Frankie Valdez yeah? U know, i neva hear nobody even mention his name from the beginning. But i dought it. Anyway could be 1 good name to throw out there. Aloha T.P.
Sup Tommy? No can be Frankie Valdez. If I memba right, gota walk down da road to make sure, but had one house between Kingsley and Gandal. Cueva is one house Silva Store side Kingsley and Chan and Kani dem. Next house Store side was Dino and Bennys farthers house and den Valdez. Inbeteen Gandal and Empty lot had one abandon house where da raft was on da beach. Next house afta Empty Lot was Shambella on da beach side and Linda DeCosta on da road side. Das too far down. So gotta be somebody move into Kingleys afta he wen dig, and late enough to know Rob MacDonald afta Empty Lot was built on. Kingsley no was der wen MacDonald came. I go ask Anna Valdez, she my next door neighbor. She can ty in all da stings behind all da family. Last time I surf was bout 1974. But I tink I heard da story bout da body. I knew Robby and Sherly well. Grewuponlots, maybe I neva meet you or maybe I did. Its all good bra. We from da road, past and present. Alohas…Paul…
E my braddas, just curious. Who wen own Empty Lot da time it was empty? Who was da people who wen allow us to use it witout bodering us? I would like to thank who ever it was and send one big Mahalo to them for giving us such a rich childhood. Neva going see someting like dis anymore. For years dey let us live and play der. I think we all together in this in saying Thank You, Mahalo, from the bottom of our hearts, for Empty Lot…Bradda Paul…
I'm guessing that GREWUPONLOTS is Pegita's brother, JB. They lived 2 houses Silva's Store side of the pier right on the beach where the big tree used to be, next door Asing's and directly in line with Cueva's house. The house was yellow back then. That dead body incident must have been about 1968 or 69. They would have been living there then, I'm pretty sure.
Funny thing; I walked up and down the beach from Perrera's house to the house Cleigh rented and to Ewa Beach Park a few times when we were just there. It seemed so much further when I was young! Maybe that's because I had a 30lb Dextra board balanced on my head? :-). Cheers! MB
