ewa beach late 60's

Yea, surfed the last 3 days in front of the parking lot…it seems a lot busier than when I first surfed there 8 years ago…SC and the outer reefs were impressive…specially yesterday when the wind turned straight offshore…

might go back to town tomorrow…

roger

Friday morning from the beach park

eh Harry and Bernie, mahalo for the enticing report on sharkcountry…I wondered how it was going to break over this swell… hopfully the next time Tahiti gets a massive swell I will try to plan to visit EB…Mike Nii needs someone to keep him company, that been my m o surfing… Berta always tells me i’m to far out and that’s why I don’t catch a lot of waves…but if you want a bomb, that is what you have to do…it would be fun to ride with a bunch of the ole crowd and talk story between sets…

I know he won’t like this but…

after surfing three consecutive days in overhead to double overhead epic conditions at his beloved home break, my brother AKA Sharkcountry sufferred his third major heart attack Sunday night. Currently he is in the hospital being scheduled for emergency bypass surgery which means cracking open his chest. In the past years he’s escaped major chest surgery by having stents put in, but now that he’s completely stented there’s no other choice than to open him up to try something else.

Obviously with our extremely small and close family we’re all devastated and I’m sure his wife is extremely upset because in typical fashion he snuck out without asking Sunday AM to squeeze another session in before the work week.

I surfed Sat-Sun with him probably the first time in any waves of consequence together in a decade or more and he spent most of Sunday just shooting footage of others to put online for his friends to enjoy.

we don’t like to talk about these things just like when I went through my own personal medical challenge last year that I am still somewhat recovering from.

But he’s always worn his heart and emotions on his sleeve unlike me and has been there when ever I was in need of something so we have closer than most. He’s also a big contributor to this thread and the reinitiation of the thoughts and feeling surrounding everything good about this neighborhood and the folks that made up our community here in Ewa Beach and here on Swaylocks.

We learned the meaning of aloha from my father, our grandaunt Aunty Girlie who lived in the red beachhouse till she died and all the tutu’s and uncles who took care of those they didn’t have any need to, including most of the surfers who surfed in front of where we lived our beloved shark country, first break, kui’s, haubush and seawall.

We both learned to keep it alive in our own ways, his in spirit and mine in the art of unconditional giving. We never ask for anything back other than the smiles and brotherhood such actions bring but perhaps some positive vibes and good thoughts this week about others will send the mana of protection and courage I sure he needs as he struggles through his challenges this week. Surfing means so much to him and at best he’ll be out for quite a awhile now so i’m sure a smile is due his way if any for those he’s given.

He’s always been proud of being the macho man protector of our family but in the end he’s still my little brother who I will always care about dearly.

mahalo and aloha to all our friends.

-Bernie

Sorry to hear of Harry's condition. I just saw him Sat. morning on the beach at Shark Country while I was taking photos from the beach. We chatted for a bit then he paddled back out. Hope his surgery is successful. My prayers go out to him and your family for a successful operation and recovery.

ewa beach braddas,  how was this south swell… did it hit as well as the last big south swell last month…

watched town all yesterday from my office perched high atop my downtown 5am-6pm prison (office)

started off small but by noon it looked like park was closing out at least kewalo’s side, The angle (more SW) looks good as courts seemed to be getting some great peelers. I’m sure waikiki must have been epic swabbies too. kind of windy/bumpy though in the early morning cleaned up later.

there were 6-10+ face a-frames waves breaking on the right off of honolulu harbor about 100-200 yards out of the left of sand island. no one out
usually you’ll see some one towing in out there outside sand island when its like that
sharky i’m sure

my sister said driving back down kunia rd from the schofield commissary the ocean was white water as far as see could see left to right. first time she saw it that way.

i guess a reverse version of that butterfly stomach feeling reverse direction drive down to haleiwa during winter.

i’ll try and get some video of it this weekend

its not as big but…

I always find out the news late, but I wanted to post an update on the Crawford Family from Papipi Drive in Ewa Beach. I got word that Skipper Crawford went and O.D. in Washington State, my good friend Paul Crawford just past away a short while back from Cancer, his brother Captain Mike from Maui is suffering from the Big C now as well. Mr. Crawford the one who hired many of the Ewa Beach gang at Charles Pankow Construction Company also passed away, and Pauls mom, Mrs. Crawford is in an old folks home also with the Big C. God have mercy, almighty fire! It just breaks my heart to see the whole family go down in that way. May our Good Father God in heaven watch over them now and forever. I really loved that family. I will always remember them all just as they were. HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Until the next big wave rolls in. naky

I have been jamming with David Kanakoa, James Kealoha and Robert Long in a band called Kolohea. We are working on some recording in the Hawaiian Slack key tradition. Have been studying first year Hawaiian Language classes, and am finally getting a grip on my life in the right direction. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to see the light. I can tell you that is a fact, because it took me nearly 50 years to be able to walk the straight and narrow path to a clean and sober life-style. Being as it may, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. The music sounds so much better, and the feeling is real when you’re not intoxicated or under the influence. Even the waves feels like a million dollars again. My motto is “In whatever you do, do it Clean and Sober.” You’ll never know until you try it. Shaka! Until the next big wave rolls in.

Rite ooooooonnnnnnnn Bradda Bernie. Supa post. Old time captcha of surf sessions rare, but lucky now get mo teknology can preserve dez tings. See da new blood carying on da past an bringing out da dreams of our bradda aborigines wid da long board days. Dez younger generation guys keep us old generation guys afloat and perpetuate our past into our future very admirably. Aloha to all my younger ohana who keep alive our soul of Ewa Beach. The soul of Ewa Beach, Puuloa, will survive because of da nature of its desendents. Hey Naky… I don’t remember much of the Crawford family but I do remember Paul. Used to see him around alot and tink da last time I seen him was in front of Parish Drrive. Dos days had plenty gravel on da side of da raod, neva had sidewalks dat time. We was talking story and he was picking rocks up wit his toes and trowing dem at me as we talked. He was trowing an I was blocking, das da last time I wen see him. Good memories of da past and one dat stands out in my mind. Used to see him alot but das da last time I wen see him. Dat memory stick out in my mind forEWA. Good freind lost now forEWA, but comes to my mind almost daily. Neva hear or see him since dat time. Seems I have lost sone past along da way, but neva loose da memories. Da picture of da last time I saw him trowing rocks at me still stuck in my mind and soul so deep no goning EWA be forgotin. Aloha to ananda Bradda, who neva get da chance to come circle fo so long. Life too short, time too fast, lucky we knew each uda wen we did. Sometimes dat chance is da last chance you get, so use it well, remember it, keep it, and hold it well, for it mat be the last chance you get. Ea Ea…Aloha to my Bradda Paul Crawford, and Aloha to you Naky…And Aloha to ALL my Braddas an Sistas who so fa away but so close in da HEART…Bradda Paul…

I remember Skip Crawford. He was firends with Ricky Kear, one year older than me. I remember a day in elementary school when Ricky and Skip were out surfing SC, and giving me and my cousins who were sveral years younger a bad time. We came in and mentioned it to my dad and Uncle Ted who were sitting along the grassline watching us. When the 2 came in they were waiting and made them pull an oiled log from the shoreline up out of the way. They never gave us a bad time again.

Paul, Mahalo for the good words. Getting better slowly, but getting better.

Dear Shark

Fast track your rehab…

1 - Fold up chair

2 - Sit at the tide line (shorebreak)

3 - Board shorts only

4 - Wind bath

5 - Sun bath

6 - Sound bath

Total head trip when you are debilitated - massive step up!

You would have to pick your time relative to day temp.

I did it through a Sydney winter - see life very differently now!

Regards

Midget

Thanks Midget. I could probably do well using your advice. I’m trying to stay out of the sun for a little while to let the cuts heal more. I have a tendancy to scar badly, and I heard that being in the sun may add to that.

Hope all is well down under, Aloha!
