Expert Advice and Criticism Needed!!

So Santa left some Flexpads under the tree for me.  He got me a Soft, Medium and Hard.  I went to use my angle grinder/sander with the soft pad and a chunk blew off.

I know the pad says dont use above 3000 rpm.  However, my grinder/sander only has one speed.  I have watched other people sand using a grinder and it appears that thiers have only one speed as well!  If I try and pull the grinder/sander trigger lightly it wont rotate the wheel.  The wheel only rotates when I fully press the trigger.

What am I doing wrong to create the foam of the pad to expand so much that it blows off?

Much needed, advice and critique needed on how to use the pads with an angle grinder/sander!

Dont hold back I can take it!  Its all about learning and making better boards!

Old school Bro, that was toddle control on and off, yeah?

Now a day’s variable speed.

Take this advice and I’ve spent big $ for the industry stuff, but I love my harbor freight 40 buck job (w/ 1 year warranty required)!

You can haul ass with the 3K pads, I only use those for repairs as they are 6" (good around fins).

I use the 8" pad for new stuff, speed sensitive!

Red (med hard)

Yellow (soft)

Blue (ultra soft).

It’s all about speed and flex.

Hope this helps…

That’s a grinder, not a sander.

You could probably slow it down with a router speed control.

Harbor cheap sells them.

Variable sanders are the way.

I sanded hundreds with a milwaukee 2800.

No variable speed.

Just feathering the trigger.

Ryobi Model # AG452K That’s 4 1/2 inch one speed ANGLE GRINDER spinning at 11000RPM Put that down and step away. Way waaaay off the mark for general board sanding w/flex pads or power pads. Save the angle grinder with a stiff rubber backing pad + 50 grit for grinding resin dams from fin boxes and leash plugs For your flex pads Google “Variable speed dial and trigger 7” / 9" Polisher/sander" Milwaukee 5540 is one of the industry standards

It’s rated for 3000rpm for a reason.

Your grinder is 11,000 - that = blown up pads.

Says right there on the tool’s label: “Use only accessories rated at least 11,000/min”

Hello???

(Might want to lay off that 420 a bit.)

Sometimes harsh comments help bring me back to reality. I knew something was off that’s what I get for going the cheap route and thinking I could use that to sand. @Bud and @BarrySnyder guess I’m going shopping this weekend. Thanks for the great advice and what to pick up next! Back to basics. Hand sanding until I can get the right tools!!

Don’t give up… you’re almost there.  With a little ‘Goop’ glue and the speed controller you can be on your way. You’ll find plenty of uses for that tool.

So stupid question John plug it in to the speed control and I can use the flex pads and my grinder to sand?

…could be possible but putting an 11000rpms tool down to 1500 is somewhat too much for an electric motor may be…

I would not waste my time or money on a spped control for that grinder.  I’ll second the $40 Harbor Freight variable speed sander polisher.  Get a wool bonnet while you’re there too.  Pick up almost any sports magazine or sign up for their email and you’ll find a 20% off coupon.

For the money do as advised above;  Get the Harbor Freight variable speed sander polisher.  Unless you are taking a job in a Professional Glass Shop; the Harbor Freight is all you will ever need.  Lowel  PS --Do as suggested and pick up a polishing bonnet while you are at it.
