eyebolt for fin box...

Does anybody else remember the eyebolts for fin boxes that were often used as leash attachments? The eye is just right for the shackle on a padlock and with a standard bicycle cable, makes a decent board lock system.

I’ve looked around and can’t find them anymore. If anybody knows where to get them or has a couple collecting dust, please post.

Back in the day…

Way back in the olden days my surfboard had one of those leash eybolt things. Sure beats a hole drilled through the fin…

Howzit John, I ahd one of those on a Yater spoon I have. I remember trying to get it out and it was hard due to corrosion since they are brass. I check to see if it's still on the board, if so you can have it.Aloha,Kokua

Surely the boatbuilding fraternity can help you out. Try Wooden Boat magazine website and look at the hardware ads…Failing that let me know as i have suppliers in UK

John,

Trade name for those would be a “Swing Bolt” - talking machinist trade here. Are made in stainless but, my catalogs didn’t show any in 8/32 or 10/32 threads - those being the 2 used in most plates for FU boxes.

Option - find a stainless thumb screw and drill a hole in the flat…

Option - also look for threaded "Rod End"s in stainless. they’re the open holed piece used in ball joints like you see on hydraulic lifts on boat hatches.

Boatyards and machine shops are places to start looking for any of above.

Remember - like metal to like metal - or you’ll end up with either fusing together of pcs or corrosion.

They’ll probably shear before coming unscrewed.

Good luck.

Pete

Looking at that John, I would use the lock to unscrew the bolt and nick your board and/or fin…

Good for a leash attachment behind the fin though…

Hi Grant -

Once the cable is wrapped tight around the rack crossbars and hooked in there you can’t unscrew the bolt. A good pair of bolt cutters will get through just about anything though. I guess nothing’s safe from a hardened criminal like yourself.

Now you’re making it harder to pinch…bugger…

That would have been a completely wasted 15 000 mile trip!!!

Hi Grant -

After a recent trip to the local army surplus store, I’m ready for you.

This cute little radar dome I’ve installed on my roof should be tracking you upon departure and the Tomahawk missle will stop you in your tracks.

You’re on!!!
