I couple of weeks ago I made a longboard colored with a yellow resin tint from Surfsource. The color was nice and bright, but after a couple of weeks of use the color has faded. Anybody have this happen?
Seen it before lots of times. The dye colorant that’s in the tint dispersion is fugitive. That is, it fades when exposed to UV light. Back in the late 90’s when resin color was making a comeback, the glass shop I worked at used some flourecent yellow tint dispersion that they borrowed from the fin company next door. Well flourecents are notorious for fading out in the sun. After a few weeks the the boards where all showing signs of fading. There are yellow tint dispersions that do a lot better out in the sun. I believe that the stuff you bought isn’t one of them. Maybe some of the pro squeegee jockeys in this forum can chime in on where they source their colors from.
you got punked! LOL
no seriously, did you use hastings? yellow tint from hastings fades unless they have done something about it. not sure what tints/ pigments surfsource uses, but it sounds like there is no uv inhibitor in it(or what ever it’s called) . you can use the yellow tint from surf supply, which i’ve used a few thousand times and none of the boards have ever faded. i always use a good amount too…like a heaping tablespoon or a good chunk out of the can with a stir stick. but with surf supply yellow you can even do a pale, ice yellow tint and it wont fade…but i wouldnt leave it out for an extended tan session in your yard or roof racks…actually i wouldnt leave any board out in the sun, period!
you can also use a bit of duratech’s yellow pigment(they have lemon yellow and chrome yellow) and it will still be transparent enough to be called a proper tint… just dont use too much of it or it will look like a milky opaque, which there is nothing wrong with if thats what you want. have not found a better yellow tint than surf supply’s though, you can make em really rich and they still come out super crystal clear
obiwon,
can you provide contact info for the surf supply you mentioned? i googled ‘surf supply’ and wasnt able to find an appropriate result.
thank you
