Just curious Herb - could you quote me a ballpark on a board similar to that, but quad / proboxes (can I get superchargers in a probox?)?
PM me either way plz! There are certain right points that are screaming for that board! 8^D
i'll pm you.

Sweet!
Wrong again GRat. I bought a green 6.6" Pacific Surfboards RocketFish out of the Plastic Fantastic Surf Shop on PCH and went accross the street afterwards and saw a David Nuuhiwa Surfcrafts winged fish that was about 6.6" That was the first longer winged twin fin fish that I ever saw back then! David was in the shop and was showing the boards to everyone in the shop and there was quite a crowd in there that day.I still wish my mother had bought that board instead but it cost much more $ than the Pacific model. David owned and operated David Nuuhiwa Surfcrafts in Huntington Beach accross the street from the pier on PCH where the Donut Shop has been for years. The Rainbow Bridge board shown in the photo that I own was shaped by Herb Spitzer, his bro Ray doesn't shape as the writing on the stringer reads.Herb Spitzer Shapes "Now and Into The Future 1980" Look Mom No Hands! This board was made for me after I saw Ray ride his 5.3" (twin fin fish with wings) into the finals at a WSA Invitational contest in South Carlsbad San Diego in 1980. I remember Ray was doing 360's after coming out of the tube during his finals heat! Herb, me and Ray had been hanging out with Buttons watching him do 360's on a Local Motion single fin just a few weeks before that contest and Ray had perfected that move on his twin fin that Herb actually shaped someone else but the kid didn't like the board and as Ray is he took the board from the kid to prove that the board was actually a good shape, making it into the finals! After the contest we went to Cardiff Reef and surfed suck outs with Ray the only one going left on minus tide 8-10 foot lefts on his 5.3" twin fin winged fish, I saw him get barrelled time and time again that morning... Shaun Stussy,
oh btw fyi,
jack gresham former frontman of the band t.s.o.l.,mentions in his book,a failed attempt at robbing a local o.g. longbeach surfboard shop.
that was my shop.
jack had stolen, like 4 boards before he tripped the alarm that late night.
within a week i had the boards back.

Wow, inventing something that had already been around for years. The shop at the donut shop came years later. Dyno was before that. Yeah Stussy, not Spitzer, and especially in Newport, ask John Gothard or Smerk Mangan who shaped the best twins back then. Oh, and I was shaping at Wave Tools, with Lance, and Walden, so your opinion doesn’t mean much to me, because I was there.
Rat---------Funny brcause I always remembered Lance from Pismo Beach where I lived for years. Lance had a shop there for a couple of years. I think he may have been going to Cal. Poly, That was between the Pismo Beach Surf Shop years 0f Ralph Miller and Granthams rise as the only shaper in town. I had been around in San Deigo, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz before I settled there for a number of years. So I either shaped my own or rode boards from shapers I knew from those places. Bruce Jones/Russel, Ron Cunningham or Yater. I had some buddies that went down to visit him in the OC. They said he fed 'em and put them up in his own home while they were down there. Wave tools Of The Spirit.
grat,
you mentioned prw ?
you worked there?
and you say .........you never saw my boards ?
i wonder what randy would say ?
herb
ps. don't get confused by the other posters on this thread...........they're not me.
i use my name and don't hide behind a jolly pirate nick name.
so if you have complaints about the way they post....... address it to them.
Herb, Never, worked at PRW, but hung out at Slater St. 30 years ago, it was the center of surfboard production in the region. On any given day, any of the world’s best board builder’s could be within reach. I was pretty green back then, but I thought I was good enough to hang out, and run a few boards through over there, and maybe pick up some tips on what was really going on. If you were there, well let’s say it was a little wild at times- especially after hours, but I never stayed to party, I just wanted to surf, shape, eat and sleep, and that was a good place to learn. I am sure we know a ton of the same people, and probably each other by face.
Of all the people, Mel Ross, and his work ethic i admired the most, for he’d laminate at both fibrecraft and PRW, doing 12 at each place, and then get the hell out of there, and not just hang around and bull-shit, and party with the boys. Mel taught me much of what I know about glassing. He was the original production manager for Hobie, then started the first real production glass shop, Newport Fiberglass, where he glassed the Currens’ and Quiggs’, and then later started O’fish’l. Mel was the real deal. And he was nice enough to mentor me about laminating.
Herb I have nothing against you and wish you nothing but the best, but the claims are way too bold, especially from yarmo the lap dog. Nonetheless, at least you have him to tell you how great you are.
LOL. ghetto, you got it, Herb’s a legend … in his own mind. “yarmo the lap dog” - spot on.
pointlesstrog,
since you're so knowledgeable,
tell us how many boards you've done........zero.
how much you have helped others here ..........zero.
all you are .......is a tiny, scared, envious ,bitter little man with no balls ,that hides behind a fake name and computer screen.
put up or shut up,kook!
herb
g,
there's a movie coming out about the signal hill speed races in the fall/winter of 2011/2012 that will expose more about myself.definately worth watching if nothing else for the vintage speed skateboarding.
i know that you know danny frazer and guy grundy, both were good friends of mine.
mel ross was a great laminator...........probably the best alive.
tragic about his wife.the last time i saw mel......... was at the velzy memorial, with a new wife under his arm and sold the ofish'l bus and moved to hawaii.
mike mcneely was a great shaper and use to drop off and pick-up,blanks and boards at my shop.
towards the end of my shop in longbeach, mike was getting this wild looking rash, and then he just fadded out of the picture.
that whole slater st. party town stuff was even too much for me at times.i stayed away from most of it.
fibercraft was a spin off of a factory from longbeach called pacific glass.it's a shame what happened to kirk,he was a hell of a nice man.back in the pacific glass days ,laura powers did the pinlines, sweet gal,you couldn't help but fall for a blond dish like her, especially one that could surf and glass.if your memory serves you correctly, there weren't many gals that surfed back then and the ones that did .............well let's say..........at least they had surfing to keep them busy.
in the mid/late 70s thru the early 80s,i sent literally thousands of boards thru prw, pacific, southshore, and con in santa monica..............con coburn was a great person and could sell a blind man reading glasses........lol.
i even had backyarders glassing, and was getting harbour's glassers doing work for me.
i 'll bet i know who you are,but again........i won't know that foresure until we meet.
i still ride shortboards/guns,and occasionally .......... longboards.
we should get some waves together.
as far as yarmo's boosting me............he just digs my work and appreciated my dedication to my work.
i have pm-ed him,and will talk late in person to him.........but he has a god given right to his opinion, just like you ,me or anyone else here.
as far as twins go check the surf heritage website for the shaper's family tree............i'm in there..........you'll be suprized where you'll find me.
as far as my claim on quads, just talk to jerry mowe ,the owner of south shore surfboards,he saw one of my quads back in like 78'.in fact he made a statement to the fact here on sways a couple years ago(when the whole quad thing was coming back around again)...........it can be archived.
i not originally from north o.c. or long beach.........i came up from imperial beach in my teen years and still have family there.
also lived in makaha on and off during my child/young adult life.lived with my older bro.,hawk, and(and a soon to be a known surf photographer) arron chang.Arron was a school and surf buddy of my older brothers.
hope all is good, and heck i live in anaheim hills/yorba linda with my wife and two daughters.if there's anything you need just ask.
herb
btw,
you mentioned the hawks.
i didn't really know chris,but i knew sammy.
we have a mutual friend...........i believe,tommy neggarman.
tom was living and working for the brothers, living off the hawk's boat....... for like ever.
tommy was a high school buddy of mine,we both graduated from bell high school in the mid 70s.
i was just wondering what happened to him ?
have you seen him around lately ?
last i saw of him was a few years ago.
he was moving to hawaii.........trying to get away from some of the bad elements here.
i hope and wish for him the best.

Herb I wish you the best, but never knew Mike Mcneely, but knew Larry Mcneely, and never knew Kirk at Fibrecraft, but Greg, and your right on about Pacific Surfglass, but I have problems remembering my kids names. Anyways, if you invented the quad fin that’s cool, and even the twin that’s cool, and if your a better shaper than those guys I mentioned earlier your the gnarliest guy around. I am tired of this stuff, and its really pointless. I was talking to a guy who I have complete respect for as a board builder at every level, and he deserves all the respect he has earned. I wish I could tell you his name, because he is like God in Swaylandia, and we both laughed at the amount of misinformation going around here.
