FANTASTICALLY FUTURISTC FOIL FIN or FULL FUNKY FAILURE

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN, TRIED, OR THOUGHT OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

IF SO DID IT WORK? I WAS THINKING OF TRYING IT ON A BEATER BOARD. WHAT KIND OF BOARD DO Y’ALL THINK WOULD WORK BEST? I WAS THINKING ABOUT EXTRA LONG FIN BOXES TO ALLOW DIFFERENT PLACEMENTS FWD/AFT.

You should have been here months ago!

hehehehe, i was going to say the same…

well… um… its interesting. It looks like a hydrafoil. The horizontal part of the fin essentially acts like an airplane wing creating lift. I would imagine that the surface areas of the vertical parts of the fin should remain similar to the surface areas of your regular fins to maintain hold and drive. It looks kinda like Roys tunnels, but i don’t think he shops here anymore.

I WAS ON “SABATICAL”. WHAT DID I MISS?

Holy crap, if there ever was a time for somebody to say, “Read the archives”, it’s right now. Look up tunnel fin and learn something about Roy.

You can search the archives, there are some threads discussing fins like that, and also tunnel fins. Most of them have some posts of Roy, so you can search for his posts and you’ll find something.

In spanish there’s a popular said that it’s like that: “…agarrate que vienen curvas!”, that means in english something like: “hold yourself because here come the curves…”.

Anyway those threads have a lot of info. Also search for the GREAT “fin theory” thread.

refreshing to hear the archival droll but I see real insight as I dont remember anyone boxing the bases of said hoopington von foil…am I addled if so I am willing to accept the ride to the sanitarium next to the beach in carlsburg with the right point beachbreak and wood shop…

so any how this ups the ante for tooling and also opens the door for multi tests in recordable time the mellor body board was a glass-on and kinda two dimensional and the Foil board from terry whaddyacallit was fixed also lets give a little credit here as we progress this hoop-tunnel eccetera rather than just saying the roy word making all the worse the loss of a dominating allseeing omnipotent usurper of credit for all things design…ambrose, heck this guy spent all this time drawing up this sucker if we incourage 'im maybe he’ll build it so we can watch 'im ride it on a couple waves…heck nobody else built any thing cool lately its been too cold and there’s been surf enough to keep me outa the workshop…how bout a nice 3/4" foil with a vert apendage and wings…wow

Ambrose, Thank you for the response and encouragement. Any ideas on what kind of board may be best suited for something like this?

Others, well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuussssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssse me. If i’d have known that it was called a tunnel fin and that the F@#K’n archives are full of Roy’s pontifications about the subject I MIGHT not have posted the thread. Is there anything in the archives about not dumping on someone cause they failed to use the archives. There is NOW!

Possiblly you should have been here 41 years ago. platty. http://www.surfresearch.com.au/f.html

How about some control on the fin…

The fin goes through a plastic fitting that goes through the board. The fin is attached to a plate. The plate is hinged to the surfboard and has a coiled spring to keep it in the open position.

on take off, step on the plate to increase drive , then slide foot off to spin 360, then apply pressure to regain control. The only drawback is that your feet have to be close to the plate. That would be pretty damn sweet if it worked.

Oops, there it is

Aquafiend, this is just the kind of thread that i think we like to read here. I told you to check the archives because i really think that Roy and others shared some good knowledge about something close to your idea.

Anyway, the tunnel fin isn’t like the one you are talking about, the tunnel fin has a full pipe some inches away from the bottom, check ROy’s site, there’s some nice work to see.

Good luck with the project… i thought that maybe, using Lockbox boxes would work.

Sorry Coque, I was to vague. I didn’t mean ALL others, just those who seemed irritated with my post.

I’ve been thinking about this idea all day. I think it would be relatively easy to try. I just don’t have a clue what type of board would be best suited for it. It seems it might work well for a long board, especially a nose rider as the foil might “lock” the tail down. On the other hand I am curios what it might do on a short board.

Of course as I write this I can hear you all saying try it on anything/everything. Still if anyone has any experience I’d like to hear about it. As soon as I finish My stand-up, commuter skate, custom ruby encrusted planer, I’ll start this.

Didn’t Deese come up with the tunnel fin when he had the South Bay Surf Shop about 1965? Logo was Custom by Deese. Gordon

I wrapped some foam, carbon fiber and resin around a 5 gallon resin pail and glassed the resulting hoop fin to a reshaped broken-in-half longboard I found in a dumpster. The results were entertaining to say the least. Photos by Jeff Chamberlain used without permission…

good scope platty a nice spectrum of fins displayed…some gaps yet a nice collection…as far as what boards yes I agree what boards and until we have a broad enough application no conclusions will be of any clarity or use… start now Fiendy I await your exaultations and unbounded vaulting into the unknown…ambrose…currently working on other than the tunnel hoop visions

Yeah dude! Now we’re talking. What would you say are the performance characterisitcs/envelope of your creation?

hi John !

did you get a chance to try that fin on any stand up or kneeboards I wonder ? [ie : did you just make the ONE fin, or subsequent experiments ? ] If not, WOULD you, at a later date, do you reckon ?

I too would be curious how it would go on a mal for instance…boxes seem a good way to go.

The squarish tunnel fin the guy here in west australia makes goes into four side fcs plugs, I seem to remember …I wonder if I can dig out a photo…

Josh ? are you there mate ? I think it was in ‘Tracks’…do you know the fin I mean, and do you have any issues of ‘Tracks’ with that ad in it please ?

… thanks mate !
