I’ve liked a couple different designs, a full deep single concave on a squashtail standard shortboard, and flat to concave vee on a short, wide fishy diamond tail were a couple standouts. The shortboard works great in all conditions, but surfs a little flat (as I think all quads do), and the diamond tail worked great in pretty good point surf, not good at all in small junk. I would like to hear people’s experiences and thoughts on the need for vee in the tail for optimum performance on a quad.
I put vee in my quads…I’m not wed to varying this but if you look at a quad as a leveraged extension of a tradtional twin (you have to be old enough to remember) then it makes sense.
Quads are rail to rail vehicles that go extraordinarily fast down the line. If the cluster is tight enough together they cutback easy enough, but not wholly like a tri as the rail position dictates a different ride. They aren’t for everyone, but can be a terrific addition to the quiver. If you’re not good changing from left to right side brains, they probably aren’t your cup of tea.
Vee has been eliminated by some shapers, which I think is a crime. Particularly in the case of twinnies and quads. If you complain about them losing speed, just advance the vee and flatten it out the tail…or add concave, amongst other things.
The cant and toe of fins is a whole other ball of wax.
I think a negative impression on quads depends on what you are used to and how you like to surf.
Vee is alright with me…I like it in the nose too. You can lubricate a board’s bottom pretty dramatically with combos of v in the nose to single concave mid section to advanced concave vee, to flat vee or otherwise. How you do your edges adds a lot to the formula.
Have fun…
My favorite quad is one i put a deep double concave from entry rocker through to the tail. fastest most responsive board!
In case you are unfamiliar with Sways there is a General Discussion forum. This topic really belongs there. Check it out. Sorry if DS or someone else mentioned this to him. I didn’t read thru the posts. Just noticed that this thread obviously didn’t belong under Industry Talk. It gets pretty defeatist when we all jump in and start making comments on posts that shouldn’t be posted under a designated forum to begin with. While I am on the “soapbox” I’d like to point out that I have noticed an especially large number of “derailed” threads lately. Seems like the waters are a little muddied to me.
I agree - it’s been moved to general discussion forum…
