FCS choice for a twin fin retro fish

Is there an FCS fin option that will suit a 5’11" twin fin retro fish. I’m building one and I’m partial to FCS. They don’t seem to have a set in their model line-up. Advice? Thanks

maybe try a quad setup, with normal thrusters up front and 3.5" sidebites behind them. that way you wont have too much pressure on the plugs and will still be able to get the hold you want.

The F-GX I think is a twin fin. Rainbow Fins makes a set for FCS as well. Link below. It would be a good idea to put a glass patch over the plugs once you set them to give them some added strenth to deal with the added stresses of bigger fins. Had a twin fin with FCS with glass patches over them and it worked well.

Depending on your size/weight you could go with the TC Redlines or their MRX Twin fin. Very expensive at $70 US.

Howzit ceroshaper, For a fish that size guys over here use the Occy's for the rails fins and a small fin for the trailer. Aloha,Kokua

I’ve make a number of retro twin-fin fish in the 5’9 - 6’ range that have fcs. It’s not my personal preference, but it’s the glasser’s go-to system, and I haven’t gotten around to making ply keels yet. I use the fcs twin fin template (that is manufactured by rainbow) that lawless referred to. I think there are 3 different Rainbow-made fcs twin fin templates; I have had the best luck with the largest of the 3. Putting a cap over the plugs to add strength to account for that extra fin area is a good idea.

I like making my own… wood core, foam core, solid fibreglass, cut-down perspex, polycarbonate [finbox models], or old glassons reshaped… the options are limitless [and cheaper, too!]

I recently got a 6’6" Frye style fish, it was set up for FCS and came with a pair of FCS FT-1. Two points

  1. I ripped the plug out of the board on my first session in impact with my arm when going over the falls. So I question the plugs ability for support big fins.

  2. I put in a pair of glass keel fins made for FCS plugs and the improved drive and speed was amazing. The FCS FT-1 felt very lifeless in comparison.

I have become accustomed to my G-AM’s and really like them for surf under headhigh, I use the side fins and i made my own tiny bonzerish trailer fin.

The above reason is WHY …well said and noticed, Burnsie !

surf source sells several sizes of twin fin sets made by rainbow fin company. they have two or three pretty large sizes that would work well on a retro fish. they are at surfsource.net or 904 247-0808.

The best for FCS compatible fin for the buck I’ve found for retro fish is Rainbow’s “Rocket Fish” fin. It’s a two plug keel-type fin with a bit of rake, solid fiberglass, 7.75 inch base (I think) and one-sided foil. Very similar to the True Ames glass-on keels, but a bit smaller base. Great fin for retro fish.

However, they also make a three plug wood fin that looks even better if you’re looking for a true wooden keel, which is what the origional fish had. It’s too expensive for me, but if you have the budget, you might look into that.

The MRX fins mentioned earlier are good for more of a true twin fin, but not necessarily a fish. I just got a set, with the small trailer, for a twin fin I built to duplicate the G&S “mini-fish,” which is not really a fish, but a twin fin/fish hybrid. Those fins are smaller than fish fins, but bigger than a, say, a G7. Had the Rocket Fish fins in it for a while, and they worked great, but I wanted to see what the 2+1 setup feels like. I’m putting the center plugs in this week, so I’ll give some feedback as soon as I get to switch over and try thm out.
