I just shaped a board with two deep channels on both sides of the stringer. I cut in the concaves to run just inside the rear fins (the board is going to be a quad). My question is…can I still use the Fusion plugs? My concern is that the inside edge of the rear plugs will be above the foam sticking into the channel/concave. Can I sand down the plug so it fits flush with the foam?
Best to plan this stuff before you shape. If you really want the fins to come right off a channel edge, glass-ons are best. I’ve seen some creative sculpting of the old FCS plugs, but carving up a fusion plug is another matter.
**What we do is use a combination of FCS "fusion" plugs @ 5 degree and 9 degree.**
**Cut out a gnat's ass deeper and adjust to cant to your spec. uphill, downhill, be anal but don’t worry about tipping the plug to achieve proper cant.**
**Aloha.**
MikeDaniel and oldphart shaper have some great advice. We second it. Might want to try using futures next time if you really have to have a removeable fin system since it’s a bit narrower than an FCS fusion plug.
Within limits it can be done…about a sixteenth of an inch or so on the edge of the box is ok…don’t sand thru the hard cap on the box, though.
