trying to find out how much of what is mixed in with resin for one set of fcs fins(6 plugs). I believe resin, catalyst, pigment, fiber powder, and wax is the combo, just not sure how much. The Last time, I had those babys smokin’.

The Last time, I had those babys > smokin’. Chris, It could be the sequence you are mixing them. Add the mill fibers after you mix everything else thoroughly.
Chris: Keep your catalyst to resin ratio about 1% of volume or what is normally used for lamination. Wax, 1-2% by volume. Pigment? about 1oz./qt.of resin is what my label says. Maybe a pencil eraser size blob per 2 plugs. I use 3- three oz. paper cups, fill each 1/2 with resin/wax/pigment. Add fibers/filler to make the total volume 3/4 of the cup. Mix well. Catalyze each cup as you use one per set of plugs. This gives you plenty of time to set your plugs, angle/cant and you have an out if the catalyst mix is off. ***I use the FCS provided dye cut foam/adhesive strips for overflow dams around the plugs. I use them all the time for other things like leash cups, fin boxes etc. What’s a good alternative to this stuff? The Last time, I had those babys > smokin’. When you say wax do you mean surfacing agent,if so don’t add any to your mixture. It is the thing that can blow the installation of the plugs. The plugs won’t bond to the mix and the plugs will be loose. Your sandpaper will gum up a little when you sand the plugs but at least your installation will be strong. I haven’t used S.A. in the mixture for 4 years and have had no problems. This well could be one of the reasons that people have problems with the FCS system (there are no bad fin systems just bad installations).
is it necessary to buy the fcs install kit??? where can i get the overflow caps.???
K.F. is exactly right. No wax in the plug mix. I went back and reviewed my reply and just got caught up in your question of ratios etc. Good luck. Tom S.

We recommend laminating resin and milled fibers only (unless it’s an epoxy board) for Red X installations. Make sure you do not use Q-cell or surfacing agents. If you get little bubbles, touch them up after the fact. But, it is never worth compromising the integrity of any install to make it easy to look pretty.

Ahh! but the overflow dam, got to be another way out. Spill the beans. What about those rolls of peel-n-stick insulation for doors and windows, real thin and narrow stuff, also sold as “pickup camper” sealer kit? Been down this road before but I still had stuff FCS sent me, now I’m out. Any thoughts? Tom S.

I’ve forget to use them a couple of times, realized it after I put the catalyst in the mixture, went ahead with the process and everything was fine. What’s funny is FCS gives you just the right amount of everything for installation but down through the years I’ve got 6 or 7 extra packages of foam dams, at least 50 extra keys and about 60 extra rail plugs, but only 3 extra center plugs, go figure.
Ha! maybe we ought to all get together with an xs inventory list. I bet we could come up with a stash of stuff. I’ve got tons of extra Center plugs, lots of twin fins lately! Thanks for the offer, I was just fishing for nuggets this super creative crew has come up with in the way of recycled stuff. Thanks.
