I glassed a friends board this weekend. 21" wide and the glass that was from (Mitch's Solana Beach) was barely able to wrap around the rails? I made it work but thought my buddy had been given a bad batch of glass. I called the surf shop and they tell me that they only sale 4oz in 25" widths and 6oz in 27" widths. This puzzles me because of the only 15 boards I have glassed I have got my glass from a place in La Mesa (closed down now) and they were always 32-36" widths on all their glass? What gives? So If I wanted to glass a performance longboard with double 4oz on a 22-23" board I would barely be able to wrap the rails? I only do lap cut glass and this would not even work. Am I going crazy here? Or is Mitch just trying to sale as little glass as possible? And does anybody know a glass supply shop in San Diego area?
Can’t speak about your specific distributor but Fiberglass Supply has 4oz in 27 and 30 inch widths
Those are standard widths. Primarily because the 6oz. on a standard lamination is the layer that is lapped. The 4oz. is usually cut at the rail. The idea being; Why stock a width of 4oz. that few people buy? Stock what the industry standard is. In other words; What most guys use for a standard 4oz./6oz. deck lam. A customer would have to pay more for the wider width and would waste several inches for a standard lamination. Wider 4oz. is a slow mover for a supplier
Hello Neptune ,
Mitch's Solona Beach is my closest supplier. I still buy stuff from them. In the begining I was willing to pay $$$ because the staff was so helpful and they had every thing I needed. I learned the hard way about cloth widths.....Now I ask before I buy. A roll of fiberglass cloth from Graphite Master will cost alot up front but your "per yard" cost will be about 1/2 of the retail price.
Not sure about your La Mesa dealer. A friend gave me some stir sticks that say Diversified Materials...1-800-245-3053.
Bashams in San Clemente has everything including cloth, blanks and a good longboard fin selection.

I'm not a E-Bay shopper but several Swaylock's brothers are.....I've gone in on deals with people , split rolls of cloth ,ect.
Bump the thread if you have to....There's plenty of deals out there.....
Thanks Stingray, I thought something wasnt right. Anyway ya, Diversified Material was the spot, good prices and every type of glass you could think of! I had a good dialogue going with them, bummer they went under. Ya, I will look around and at that site you gave me. I got Roger at OB surf and skate selling me some glass that he gets every once and awhile. You just have to hit him up when he has some in stock. He had reasonable prices for the wide 4&6 oz cloth at his old location but now he seems to be cluttered up with his new shop. I hope I can get him to come around, because it would be nice to have a local spot (to me) to get glass. Alright, talk at you later. R
If you aren’t in a super hurry just put Thayercraft.com in your browser and you will find every type of fiberglass you need at low prices, smaller quantities, and most of those prices include shiiping thru Fed Ex. I got some 4 oz. for $1.57/yd. . Wider widths about $1.70. That’s pretty cheap in my book. Don’t rule out getting a wider width then cut the roll as needed.
Hey Dead; Just wondering? Ever try to saw one of those wide rolls in half? Like those 58" and wider rolls. I was just wondering if it could be done? Chop saw, table saw. Wrap the roll with 2 or 3" masking tape at the middle, mark your cut line on that? Possible? Occasionally that wide stuff comes up really cheap. Lowel
Howzit McDing, Funny you should bring that up since I have never seen it discussed or anybody do a post and rarely even hear it in a thread. I used to cut those big rolls but it was Multidirectinal glass with a regular old crosscut hand saw and all the rest of the crew would run for the hillls because of the dreaded ITCH and just laughed finished the cut. We were refinishing lanais with a layer of fiberglass and a paint that would penetrate the glass and the whole thing adhered to the plywood underneath. I would use a Sawsall with a long blade now.Aloha ,Kokua
Kokua-------Figured it could be done, just never heard anyone say they had done it. I worked on a project in Puhi not to long after Iniki (condo/townhomes) ; I remember watching the guys do the lanais with fiberglass cloth and somekind of oil base paint. Lowel
FWIW there was a thread a couple years ago titled "Cutting fiberglass while rolled." I haven't tried it but there were a few other interesting suggestions in there.
Worth a try.
Howzit McDing,Yeah we were doing the lanais at Pono Kai in Kapaa. Aloha,Kokua
