fiberglass

what kind of fiberglass is tough but light? and i was also looking at the post on carbonfiber rails. has anyone ever tried making a board out of carbon fiber??

There is a board in archives… #286 - 10/30/2001 by Thomas Hast.

Some may disput it, but try ‘s’ glass. Definitely tougher by my investigation, tests and experiences.

ive made about a dozen full carbon boards 10 on pu and 2 on eps ,some of the pu’s were done in epoxy the rest in poly…the stuff is so stiff its not funny 1 customer brought a board back and the rail was cracked about 2 feet from the nose after he hit the nose on a brick wall ,its so stiff that it transfers load till it finds a weak point …in my opinion its not a smoothe ride. its breaking point is no better than glass only difference is it stays completly stiff till it breaks unlike glass it doesnt deform or show signs of stress until it breaks ,with out much warning… regards BERT

I agree with Bert. Carbon is a lot stiffer and definitely has more tensile strength, but it’s impact resistance is worse than glass of a similar weight. Leave it in the sun too long once, and you may regret it.

yea you just reminded me i couldnt wax up even on cold days …i had to wax in the water or upside down… regards BERT
