Just wondering if anyone has ever made a plaque for outdoor applications using timber and fibreglass? A friend passed away and his brother would like to build a plaque from these materials to be placed on a rock on the local breakwall. He is wanting to put a photograph and some wording. My concerns are what resin and timber would be most compatible and also how to go about putting an image under the glass, eg regular photo or photo printed to rice paper etc? Any advice or knowledge on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Honestly, I would go with casting resin. Either epoxy or call Fiberglass Hawaii and see if their poly casting resin would get hot and melt the picture. I think that regular resin would warp the picture while it cured.
I have previously used the poly casting resing and was very happy with it when combined with wood. You catalyze it just like you would normal resin but takes longer to cure…hence I think it wouldn’t get as hot.
If you cover all the wood than any wood is in play. Covering only some parts of the wood with a protective coating than I would look more towards wood that is resistive to the elements like cedar…

Thanks warrior
I’ve done a photo on rice paper on several wood tables using R&R resin, worked fine. Try a test first but should work.
Sorry for your loss Finsout. Have you thought about doing the text and photo as a 3D relief in the wood and then coating it?-J
I second casting resin or epoxy of some sort. Look up “resin bar tops” or something similar. Not sure fiberglass comes into play with these applications. I’m truly sorry to hear about your loss.
Thanks guys.
Hey Finz I glassed this table with regular poly resin. Not sure what the timber was but had no problems. I guess if you think of stringers cedar, obeche, ply most woods can be glassed over with no probs. You could lay rice paper decals under a layer of glass and it should come up sweet if your wood is flat and smooth.
Thanks Zac, I ended up going with an epoxy mainly for the sake of not risking ruining the photograph that will be inserted.
I saw that table on instagram. Turned out beautiful.
