hey guys ive been working on snapped board and i alredy attached it. looks very good by the way very accurate.
so my question is should i do thin q-cell layer or can i skip that and straight to the glass. the situation is like this: all fiberglass in this area as been ripped of but the foam stay as it was…i atteched photo take a look please
I would glue both parts of the board with polyurethane expanding glue, taking care to keep the exact original rocker. Let cure, sand excess foam, glass.
You didnt answer my question. i alredy glue the both part ! now i just need to glass buy i have indecision. stragiht to glass or thin q-cell layers please take a look at my first post here and try to understand me. thanks.
Remove a little more of the old fiberglass to the curve of the rail, where you can blend it in easier. What foam is it, and how did the logo not peel off with the fiberglass?
Sorry, I don’t know where your other post is. The only other one I see is about matching colors. BTW, why do you post different threads if they are about the same thing?
Trying to understand what you mean, but not sure… If the foam is badly indented in different places you’ll need to fill the holes with a filler; otherwise, why “thin layers of Q-cell”? Unless your board is EPS but I don’t think so? Just sand the edges of what’s left of fiberglass at an angle, sand widely around the break then glass.
If you ask me, it’s a waste of time (and money) to try and fix a broken board. Way faster and easier to shape and glass another one.
everysurfer its urthane foam and i have no idea how to logo stay there haha it bond very well to the foam
balsa i talked about the first comment here were i talked about the problem…this is not same thing…im repaing few board at once some board need color matching and some other dont like this one. so for this reason i opend 2 therads it will also help to the guys that serach info. i thoght it will help get the surface evenly but now i understand that im wrong. as i said before its a urathne foam. and this is not my board haha
Not uncommon for the logo to stay on when the glass gets ripped off on broken board.
As to the rest of your question, if there’s any dents or places where the foam got taken up with the ripped off glass (can’t see it in the pic, but most likely this is the case), then a thin layer of q-cell is good to prep before glassing. Do as Balsa says and feather the remaining glass so there’s not a big hump to glass over between it and the foam.
Surfthis, Why do you think the laminate sticks to the foam, rather than peeling off with the fiberglass?
Does it go back to the use of Cerex/ Skins where it improves the bond of the laminate to the foam? It seems that the bond between a softer fabric/ rice paper is stronger than the bond of fiberglass to foam!
