I installed a single fin box (10.5"(L) x 1"(D) on my 9’ long board and the tail is foiled so I need to grind about 3/4" of the box so its level. I picked up some great tips at my local shop but was wondering if any one else had some tips for grinding this much plastic off the box? Also I am wondering what is preferred when glassing the box to glass over a box or to run the glass up to the edge? Thanks in advance and one of the tricks Doug Yartz from Surf Country shared with me for grinding dwon the box was to make a dremel bit with a milk carton lid attached to a grinder bit and use spray adhesive and use 36 grit sand paper.
3/4" may be too much to grind off,the box may not function afterwards.
Whoops!!! 3/4" is how much lip I am going to be left with so I will have to grind down 1/4".
Howzit row,If it's a Bahne box it is actually only 7/8ths from the bottom of the tabs to the bottom of the box so you are alright I used to rout the hole so it was almost an 1/8 deeper than the box was deep if there was enough foam and never had problems . Aloha,Koua
I did a thread on this topic earlier this month. If you can get past the drama there's some good information on that thread.
Search function? On really thin tails I grind 1/16" or more off of the box before install. That would be the part of the box that is going to be closest to the deck. The 2 inch angle grinder is your friend after install....but I've also done it with a rasp file, a trim router, a large grinder, a small grinder, and by hand with a wood sanding block and some 60 grit sand paper.

“make a dremel bit with a milk carton lid attached to a grinder bit and use spray adhesive and use 36 grit sand paper”
Please explain? do you mean the plastic lid from a 1 gallon jug? making your own 36 grit flat grinder discs?
That would be correct and the guy who showed me this hot needled the bit to the plastic lid but I am using AB epoxy.
Howzit ray, I thought this thread seemed familar, thanks for jogging my brain cells. Aloha,Kokua
I am almost there with the box and the milk carton is working great I just wish I had more time to work on it. I have been thinking the problem is the foiled out tail and the flex and might be the reason the box comes loose in the first place. Should I glass over the edge for added strength of the box or just glass around box?
Still not totally stoked on my job because I ended up grinding down a little to much and need to use a plastic card to keep the fin tight. I was thinking about glassing the fin in but wasn’t sure if I needed to cut out the box again and glass over or keep it and glass over? Also and prep to the fin or special tricks that might help? Thanks in advance.
(Edit) forgot what board I was on and spelled stoked stocked (whoops))
